How to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco: all the options

Train, Inca Trail, Salkantay or a one-day trip: compare routes, prices and how far ahead to book.

There is no road to Machu Picchu: you arrive at Aguas Calientes by train or on foot, then take a 25-minute bus up to the citadel. These are the main options from Cusco.

1. Machu Picchu Full Day by train (USD 279)

All tickets included and back in Cusco the same night. Best if you are short on time.

2. Salkantay Trek 5 days (from USD 245)

The most scenic alternative trek: Humantay Lagoon, a 4,650 m pass and cloud forest. No permits needed.

3. Classic Inca Trail 4 days (USD 695)

The original Inca path ending at the Sun Gate. Permits are limited: book about 3 months ahead.

Booking tips

  • Machu Picchu tickets sell out from May to September.
  • Bring your original passport: it is checked at the train and at the entrance.
  • Leave your big luggage at Recoleta for free while you travel.
