What Was Vitcos?
Vitcos, also known as Vilcabamba, was the capital of the Neo-Inca State from 1539 to 1572. This state served as the last refuge for the Inca Empire until it ultimately fell to the Spaniards and their indigenous allies in 1572, marking the end of Inca resistance to Spanish rule. After its fall, Vilcabamba was abandoned, and its location faded into obscurity over time. The ruins of this once-vibrant capital remained lost to history until 1911, when explorer Hiram Bingham mistakenly identified Machu Picchu as the site of Vilcabamba.
During his expeditions, however, Bingham also encountered a site referred to as Espiritu Pampa by local Peruvians. It wasn’t until 1964 that Gene Savoy successfully identified Espiritu Pampa as the legendary Vilcabamba, a recognition that has since gained wide acceptance among archaeologists and historians. This discovery not only shed light on the final chapter of the Inca Empire but also ignited a renewed interest in the region’s rich historical tapestry.
