Our 3-day Qelqaya Trekking itinerary has been meticulously crafted to highlight the best night stops and attractions of this breathtaking region. However, please remember that local conditions may vary and unforeseen circumstances can arise, so consider this itinerary as a guideline.

Day 1: Cusco – Phinaya – Sivinaccocha – Quehuar

Your adventure begins in the vibrant city of Cusco, where we’ll pick you up at 5:30 AM from your hotel or meet at a prearranged point confirmed during booking. From here, we’ll set off on a scenic two-hour drive in a private vehicle to the quaint village of Pitumarka, nestled amidst the stunning Andes. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel your day. This stop also allows time to gather last-minute essentials and refresh before continuing the journey.

Next, we travel deeper into the Andes, passing through awe-inspiring vistas for approximately four hours until we reach the pristine Sivinaccocha lagoon, located at an impressive altitude of 4,600 meters above sea level. This stunning location, the largest lake in the region, offers jaw-dropping views of snowy peaks mirrored in its turquoise waters. Take this time to explore the area and capture breathtaking photographs of this natural wonder.

After marveling at Sivinaccocha, we continue for half an hour to the Huchuy Phinaya community, where a delicious and energizing lunch will be served. This is your chance to rest, refuel, and take in the serene surroundings before the final leg of the day’s trek.

The day concludes with a one-hour drive to our campsite at Quehuar, situated at an altitude of 4,850 meters. Here, we’ll set up your comfortable tents for the night as you settle in. While the landscape is spectacular, be prepared for a chilly night in the high Andes, so bundle up and enjoy the crisp mountain air. Take this time to relax under the star-filled sky, a breathtaking display far away from the lights of the modern world, before resting for the exciting adventures ahead.

Details for the Day

Today is the Main Event: A Close Encounter with the Magnificent Qelqaya Ice Cap

The crown jewel of the adventure awaits! Today, you’ll experience the awe-inspiring Qelqaya Ice Cap, the world’s largest tropical glacier, in all its splendor. This will be a day etched in your memory as you ascend through stunning landscapes and immerse yourself in the beauty of the high Andes.

🌅 Morning: Ascent to the Glacier

  • Wake-up & Fuel: The day begins before dawn at 5:30 AM when a warm cup of coca tea is brought to your tent, followed by a nourishing breakfast prepared by our team. These will provide the energy you need for the demanding trek ahead.
  • The Trek: Leaving Quehuar campsite by sunrise, we start a steady, steep ascent through the rugged puna grasslands that characterize this high-altitude region. Covering a distance of approximately 5 km (3 miles), this uphill trek takes about 3 hours at a measured pace to acclimatize properly to the thin air.
  • Changing Landscape: The scenery evolves with every step. Panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, including the legendary Ausangate, dominate the horizon. The trail then weaves through glacial moraines and small, glistening lagoons formed by the glacier’s meltwater.
  • First Sight of the Glacier: Soon, the breathtaking Qelqaya Glacier appears on the horizon in its full magnificence. Its sprawling expanse of pristine white and mesmerizing blue ice offers a surreal contrast to the dry, tropical Andes—a moment where nature’s artistry takes center stage.

🧊 Mid-Day: Exploration of the Ice Cap

  • Reaching the Edge: Standing at the edge of the glacier, at an altitude of approximately 5,500 m (18,045 ft), you can take a well-deserved rest. Here, you’ll have time to acclimate, soak in your surroundings, and marvel at the scale and beauty of this natural treasure.
  • Glacier Exploration: Under the guidance of our expert team, you’ll safely explore accessible parts of the glacier. Witness the surreal shapes etched into the ancient ice, the luminous blue tones shimmering through crevasses, and the steady flow of glacial meltwater carving its path.
  • Photography & Reflection: The glacier is not only visually stunning but also deeply humbling. Enjoy ample time to capture its beauty with your camera and reflect on its vital ecological significance. Your guide will share fascinating insights into its geology and the important role Qelqaya plays in sustaining local communities.

🏕️ Afternoon: Return to Camp & Rest

  • Descent: After fully absorbing the beauty and grandeur of the Qelqaya Glacier, we retrace our steps back to the Quehuar campsite. The descent is quicker yet still requires focus due to the descent’s steep nature.

    Responsible travel...

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

    • Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.

    • Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites during our treks contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimize our environmental footprint by using biodegradable products.
