An Immersive Cultural Journey in the Andes
Discover the Patabamba Trek, a mesmerizing hiking route in the Cusco region that serves as a perfect alternative to the crowded Inca Trail. This 2-day adventure offers a breathtaking combination of high-Andean landscapes, panoramic views of the Sacred Valley, and profound cultural immersion.
Known as the “Balcony of the Sacred Valley,” this route takes you through serene valleys, past snow-capped peaks, and into the heart of traditional Quechua communities. You will traverse trails teeming with vibrant native flora and biodiversity—a paradise for botanists and birdwatchers alike. Unlike the commercial routes, the Patabamba trail remains pristine and peaceful, allowing for a genuine connection with nature.
The crown jewel of this trek is the visit to Huchuy Qosqo (“Little Cusco”), an archaeological marvel perched high above the town of Lamay. Beyond the history, you will experience the warmth of Andean hospitality through a homestay with a local family, sharing stories, meals, and traditions. For adventurers seeking authenticity, heritage, and stunning scenery, the Patabamba Trek is an unforgettable choice.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How difficult is the Patabamba Trek? This trek is rated Moderate. While the distances are manageable, the altitude (reaching 4,200m) makes it challenging. There are some steep ascents on Day 1 and a steep descent on Day 2. We recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 2 days prior.
2. Do I need a sleeping bag? For the standard itinerary, we stay in a local lodge/homestay with beds and blankets. However, it can get very cold at night. If you tend to get cold easily, bringing a sleeping bag liner or a light sleeping bag is a good idea for extra warmth.
3. What is the difference between the “Trek Only” and “With Machu Picchu” options?
Trek Only: Ends on Day 2. After the hike to Lamay, we drive you back to your hotel in Cusco.
With Machu Picchu: On Day 2, instead of returning to Cusco, we drive you to the train station. You sleep in Aguas Calientes and visit Machu Picchu on Day 3, returning to Cusco that evening.
4. Is there electricity at the lodge? Yes, the lodges at Huchuy Qosqo generally have electricity for charging devices, but it can be unreliable during storms. Bringing a portable power bank is highly recommended.
5. What is the bathroom situation? The homestay/lodge on the first night has flush toilets and running water. On the trail, nature calls!
6. Can I hike Huayna Picchu? If you choose the “With Machu Picchu” option, yes. However, Huayna Picchu permits sell out months in advance and cost an additional US$75. You must request this at the time of booking.
