Essential Info
Essential Information for the Salkantay Trek
Welcome to Cusco
Cusco is the heart of your Peruvian adventure! It’s helpful to remember that the airport here serves only domestic flights. As an international visitor, you’ll need to clear customs in Lima, where you’ll also collect and recheck your luggage, even if you’re continuing with the same airline. Most travelers prefer to arrive in Cusco by airplane, with a variety of airlines available to suit your needs. While LAN Airlines might be slightly pricier, they provide a comprehensive schedule of flights. Be mindful that flights can occasionally be delayed or canceled due to Cusco’s high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions. For those who wish to take a more scenic route, consider the bus journey, though it’s a lengthy 20-hour ride from Lima. While buses in Peru are comfortable, this option is best suited for those traveling from closer cities like Puno or Arequipa, especially if you’re short on time.
Pre-trek Briefing for the 5-Day Salkantay Trek
We warmly invite you to our pre-trek briefing, an essential session designed to equip you with all the necessary information for your 5-day Salkantay Trek. Scheduled for the evening before your adventure at 6:00 PM, this briefing will be held at either our official office or at your hotel in Cusco. Embrace this opportunity to address any questions you may have and gain clarity about the trekking itinerary. Our expert guides are eager to share valuable insights and tips that will enhance your experience. Let this session serve as your gateway to an exhilarating journey through breathtaking landscapes.
Managing Your Luggage
To ensure a seamless trekking experience, we provide a convenient luggage service. Store any excess belongings either with us or at your Cusco accommodation, allowing you to focus solely on your adventure. Your luggage will be well cared for and returned promptly after your trek, so proper tagging is essential for easy identification.
Understanding the Altitude
Understanding altitude sickness is crucial as you prepare for your trip to Peru, especially Cusco. At higher elevations, oxygen levels decrease, necessitating your body to adapt. It’s advisable to spend a couple of days in Cusco before embarking on any Andean treks. Symptoms may resemble flu-like conditions—headaches, fatigue, or nausea, among others. If severe symptoms arise, please contact our office immediately for medical support. While most visitors only experience minor effects, preparing your body adequately is vital. Limiting your intake of coffee and alcohol can help prevent dehydration, while refraining from smoking will aid in oxygen absorption. Avoiding sleeping pills is also recommended, as they can affect your breathing. Consult your doctor regarding medications like acetazolamide, as some travelers find them helpful. By staying hydrated and pacing yourself, you can savour every moment of your adventure with minimal risk.
Weather Conditions
Cusco’s weather can be unpredictable and varied. Though generally dry from April to October, be prepared for unexpected rains or intense sunshine. Equip yourself with waterproof items such as jackets, pants, and ponchos, and remember to pack gloves for chilly or damp conditions. Dressing in layers will help you adapt to seasonal changes, ensuring comfort throughout your trek. A cozy down jacket for cooler evening temperatures is advisable.
Porter Services Included
Our trekking excursions are supported by a dedicated team of porters who expertly manage campsite setup and transport gear. They will carry essential duffel bags provided during the pre-trek briefing. Make sure your travel bag does not exceed 7 kg (14 lbs) and contains your sleeping bag and air mattress. You can trust our skilled porters to facilitate a smooth and enjoyable trekking experience.
Duffel Bag Details for the 5-Day Salkantay Trek
You will receive a duffel bag for the Salkantay Trek to conveniently carry your clothing. Please adhere to the 7 kg (15.4 lbs) weight limit. Horsemen will transport these bags, separate from food and camping equipment. Be aware that you will only have access to your duffel contents at the end of each day, as the horsemen typically advance of the group.
The Importance of Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a wise safeguard that provides vital protection against unforeseen events, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or misplaced luggage. It’s easy to obtain and ensures your travel investment is secure, offering you peace of mind. We strongly encourage you to secure this essential coverage before your journey begins.

Frequently Asked Questions for Salkantay Trek
How challenging is the 5-Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?
Embarking on the 5-Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu offers an invigorating experience with a moderate to challenging level of difficulty. Perfect for adventure enthusiasts with a decent fitness level, this trek requires perseverance and physical readiness. To really soar, we highly recommend spending at least two days in Cusco to adjust to the high altitude beforehand. Even those in fantastic shape should be mindful of altitude sickness possibilities. Encompassing about 72 kilometers (45 miles) over five fulfilling days, this trek tends to be slightly more demanding than the Inca Trail, promising an unforgettable adventure.
What is the toughest part of the Salkantay Trek?
Prepare yourself for the most rigorous section of your adventure at the Salkantay Pass, which peaks at a breathtaking 14,760 feet (4,600 meters). This part of the trek demands careful preparation due to its strong winds, chilly temperatures, and potential for altitude sickness. Don’t worry, though—symptoms usually subside as you descend to where the air is richer with oxygen. The Salkantay Pass not only tests your uphill climbing skills but also your mental strength, making it the most rewarding part of your trek.
When is the ideal time to embark on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?
You can embark on the 5-Day Salkantay Trek throughout the year, but the period from mid-April to mid-November—known as the dry season—is particularly favorable. Don’t overlook May and October, though, as they offer fantastic weather conditions with fewer travelers, ensuring a more intimate adventure experience.
What is the weather like during the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?
As you journey along the 5-Day Salkantay Trek, expect varied weather due to the diverse terrains and altitudes. Most of the route boasts pleasant weather, but take caution at Salkantay Pass, where temperatures can plummet. Luckily, the campsites nearer the Amazon Jungle are blissfully warmer, allowing you to experience a delightful mix of climates throughout your exciting trek.
Can I modify my starting date for the 5-Day Salkantay Trek?
Absolutely! You can adjust your start date for the Salkantay Trek after purchasing your tickets and placing a security deposit. How concerned should I be about altitude sickness, and what can I do to avoid it?
Altitude sickness can be a challenge at higher elevations. To manage this, proper acclimatization is a must. Spending at least two days in Cusco before your trek is advised to help your body adapt. Stay hydrated, skip the alcohol, and opt for light meals. Listen to your body—take breaks and consider coca leaf tea for relief. If you’re worried, consult your doctor about preventive measures like Diamox pills.
What steps should I take if I experience altitude sickness during the Trek?
