The SUN fest or Inti raymi
Inti Raymi, the Sun Festival, commences at the ancient remains of Qorikancha, the revered sun temple. The vibrant procession weaves through streets brimming with lively music, spirited dancing, solemn prayers, scattered flowers, and women sweeping away evil spirits with brooms. Accompanying the leader are his female counterpart, Mama Occllo, along with various priests and participants adorned in costumes representing snakes, pumas, and condors.
Upon reaching the hilltop square, speeches are eloquently delivered in Quechua, the language of the Incas, as the crowd anticipates the symbolic sacrifice. Once the high priest has performed the traditional rites with the llamas, he raises a heart toward Pachamama and interprets the future through the patterns of bloodstains. As the sun dips below the horizon, bonfires alight, and the procession returns to Cuzco.
In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors suppressed Inti Raymi, deeming it a pagan ritual contrary to their Catholic beliefs. Revived in 1944, the festival’s modern reconstruction draws inspiration from the writings of Garcilaso de la Vega, ‘El Inca’.

Navigating the Altitude
Altitude sickness can be a concern when you visit high-altitude destinations like Cusco. Symptoms often mirror those of the flu, including headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Should you experience severe symptoms, contacting our office for medical support is advised.
To minimize altitude sickness, ease into activities to help your body acclimatize. Hydrate well with water or coca tea—both are excellent for oxygen transport and readily available at your hotel. Avoid alcohol, coffee, smoking, and sleeping pills to prevent dehydration, impaired oxygen intake, and breathing issues.
Preventive medication like acetazolamide and dexamethasone might be prescribed by your healthcare provider. These should typically be taken two days before high-altitude arrival and continued throughout your visit.
Weather Conditions
Cusco’s weather, found at the core of the Andes, is known for its contrasts and unpredictability. The rugged terrain doesn’t fit neatly into wet and dry seasons. While the dry season runs from April to October, you might encounter a surprise shower in June or sunshine in December. Travelers should always be ready with waterproof attire such as jackets and ponchos.
With diverse microclimates, the Andean region’s weather calls for adaptable attire. Layering lets you adjust easily as temperatures shift during tours. Nights are reliably chilly, so a warm winter jacket is wise to pack. Visiting Machu Picchu can feel like experiencing several seasons in a single day.
The altitude also plays a key role in predicting Cusco’s weather. At over 11,000 feet, the air is thinner, impacting oxygen levels compared to other stops. Visitors might encounter altitude sickness, with symptoms like headaches and shortness of breath. To avoid discomfort, spend a few days in Cusco acclimatizing before starting any challenging activities.
Travel Insurance
For a worry-free adventure on the 6-day Inti Raymi Adventure Tour, securing travel insurance is vital. This safety net protects your trip against unforeseeable mishaps. Whether it’s a sudden illness or unforeseen incident, travel insurance provides financial coverage for cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. With this peace of mind, dive fully into your travel escapades. We strongly advise acquiring travel insurance before setting out; it’s a trivial expense for the invaluable benefits it offers. A straightforward process ensures you’re covered, differentiating between a minor setback and a major crisis. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
