We’ll rise before sunrise to reach the Inca citadel by its 6:00 a.m. opening, beating the crowds and experiencing the soft morning light bathing the ancient rocks. From Aguas Calientes, a bus will take us directly to the citadel, where you’ll marvel at its incredible scale upon entry.
Inside, your guide will lead a two-hour tour, exploring key areas such as houses, temples, terraces, and fields. You’ll witness the Incas’ astonishing ingenuity—a mystery even today—as they brilliantly organized a sustainable and beautiful community on the mountainside. Without modern tools like iron or steel, they channeled water through sophisticated canals and aqueducts throughout the city. When Hiram Bingham rediscovered this site, it was overgrown and in disrepair. Since then, it has been meticulously cleaned, restored, and protected, becoming a global treasure.
After the guided tour, you can opt for an additional hike to Huayna Picchu (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3,000 m / 9,843 ft). These tickets must be reserved in advance and offer breathtaking panoramic views of the citadel.
Later, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding a train back to Ollantaytambo (train times depend on availability).
