Travel Guide

Travel Guide for Sacred Valley Exploration

Discover the Sacred Valley of the Incas, also known as Urubamba Valley, a breathtaking Peruvian region that served as the epicenter of the Inca Empire. This stunning locale is nestled among the mighty Andean peaks and coursed through by the Urubamba River, offering a landscape rich with archaeological marvels and vibrant cultural heritage. Dotted with remarkable Incan ruins, such as the fortified town of Ollantaytambo and the fascinating circular terraces at Moray, this region showcases the exceptional architectural brilliance of the Incas. While its fertile lands once fed the mighty Inca civilization, today they beckon visitors with enchanting landscapes, traditional markets, and the warmth of welcoming local communities.

History:

Step back in time to the grandeur of the Inca Empire in the Sacred Valley, a realm ruled by the Incas from the 13th to the 16th century. During this era, the Incas achieved unmatched architectural triumphs, skillfully utilizing the natural landscape to develop intricate agricultural terraces, robust fortifications, and sacred ceremonial grounds. This valley was not just agriculturally vital, but it was spiritually revered by the Incas. The imposing mountains and the formidable Urubamba River imbued the area with profound religious significance. Despite the empire’s fall during the 16th century Spanish conquest, their enduring legacy remains in the remarkable ruins dotting the landscape and the enduring traditions of the local communities.

Getting There:

Reaching the Sacred Valley is an adventure as captivating as its destination. Depart from Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, situated about 60 kilometers southeast. Opt for a taxi or a colectivo (shared taxi) for a one-hour scenic journey to the charming town of Pisac, often considered the entrance to the Sacred Valley. Alternatively, for a more picturesque experience, travel with PeruRail from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, an enchanting train ride offering breathtaking vistas of Andean scenery and glaciers. Remember to take some time to acclimatize to the high altitude before embarking on your valley explorations.

When to Go:

The ideal time to explore the Sacred Valley is from May to September during the dry season, presenting clear skies and majestic views of the Andean peaks. This period is perfect for hiking and outdoor adventures but also draws the most visitors. For a more serene experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April or October when the weather is pleasant, yet crowds are more manageable.

Where to Stay:

The Sacred Valley offers diverse accommodations ranging from budget lodgings to luxurious hotels. Pisac is perfect for those desiring a cozy local stay, with its variety of friendly guesthouses. For a more luxurious retreat, Urubamba boasts high-end resorts featuring world-class amenities and stunning views of the Andes. In Ollantaytambo, find everything from quaint family-run inns to exquisite boutique hotels, ensuring every traveler finds their perfect stay amid the valley’s striking natural beauty.

Things to Do:

Adventure abounds in the Sacred Valley, catering to all interests. Thrill-seekers can immerse themselves in zip-lining or white-water rafting on the Urubamba River. History enthusiasts must visit Machu Picchu, the legendary lost Incan city, and perhaps embark on a trek along the Inca Trail for an authentic experience. Dive into local culture at Pisac’s bustling market, filled with traditional Andean crafts. Don’t skip the Maras Salt Mines and Moray Terraces for insights into the Incas’ agricultural prowess. For a touch of calm, enjoy a serene walk in Ollantaytambo’s gardens or a peaceful picnic amid the lush Valley landscapes. And savor local cuisine such as Peruvian corn and potatoes to delight your palate.

Important Sites to Visit in the Sacred Valley of the Incas:

When exploring the Sacred Valley, prioritize visiting the Pisac Ruins to explore an ancient fortress and admire the stunning agricultural terraces. Discover the Ollantaytambo Ruins, known for impressive stonework and panoramic vistas of the valley. In Chinchero District, experience the beauty of a colonial-era church with exquisite frescoes and engage with the lively Sunday market. For a unique interaction, visit the Awana Kancha Alpaca Farm, where you can see alpacas up close and learn about traditional weaving. No Sacred Valley trip is complete without visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu, the awe-inspiring ancient Incan citadel high in the Andes Mountains.

Festivals in the Sacred Valley enhance your cultural journey. Witness Inti Raymi, the vibrant festival honoring the Sun God on June 24th with traditional dances, music, and colorful costumes. Other noteworthy celebrations include the Chaccu ceremony, where communities gather for vicuña shearing, and the Qoyllur Rit’i pilgrimage, a spiritual event dedicated to the mountain deities known as the Apus.

Food and Drink:

When it comes to food and drink in the Sacred Valley, prepare for a feast of traditional Peruvian flavors. Relish dishes featuring corn, potatoes, and quinoa, with ‘Cuy’ (guinea pig) as a must-try regional delicacy. Adventurous foodies might appreciate ‘Chicha de Jora’, a local fermented corn beer. For softer tastes, enjoy fresh fruit juices and Andean herbal teas like ‘mate de coca’. For an elevated dining experience, explore ‘Novo-Andino’ cuisine, which modernizes traditional Andean ingredients. Each meal promises fresh, locally sourced ingredients, offering a delightful taste of the culinary heritage of the Sacred Valley.

The Incredible Biodiversity

The Sacred Valley is also a testament to Peru’s astonishing biodiversity. The valley and surrounding areas are rich with diverse ecosystems, home to myriad plant and animal species. From high-altitude grasslands inhabited by vicuñas and spectacled bears to fertile valleys alive with birdlife, this region captivates nature enthusiasts and wildlife admirers alike. Its agricultural bounty, including corn, potatoes, and quinoa, is pivotal to both local cuisine and the community’s way of life, underpinning the importance of its ecological preservation.

Safety:

Travel safety in the Sacred Valley is generally assured, yet savvy travelers should always observe basic precautionary measures. Keep belongings secure and remain vigilant for pickpockets in crowded places, especially during festivals. When participating in outdoor activities or events, dress according to the climate and altitude. Hydration and sun protection are crucial, given the intensity of UV radiation. For any health concerns, clinics and hospitals are readily accessible throughout the region. Remember, responsible travel ensures a safe and enjoyable adventure.
