INTI RAYMI SETTINGS FOR THE CEREMONY:
The “Inti Raymi” festival on June 24 consists of three settings. We recommend arriving early for optimal viewing spots at “Qoricancha” and the Main Square.
1.- The “QORIKANCHA”.- Once the Incas’ sun temple, covered in gold and silver, Qoricancha hosts the opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m., lasting 45 minutes.
2.- The “HAUHAYPATA” or Main Square.- In Incan times, the main square was larger and featured a ceremonial platform, “Usno,” where key festivals like Inti Raymi were celebrated. This celebration begins at 11:00 a.m. and lasts one hour.
3.- SAQSAYWAMAN.- This striking Inca temple, just 3 km from Cusco, is the centerpiece of Inti Raymi, with numbered seating provided by the government. “Sacsaywaman,” meaning “falcon, satiate” in Quechua, begins its ceremony at 1:30 p.m. and lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes.
THE INTI RAYMI CEREMONIES AND RITUALS:
- Ceremonial Initiation
- Report on the four Regions of the Inca Empire: Qollasuyu, Kuntisuyu, Antisuyu, and Chinchaysuyu.
- Ritual of the sacred “Chicha,” a corn drink prepared by the “Acllas,” or chosen women (the Empire’s most beautiful girls)
- Ritual of the Holy Fire
- Sacrifice of the llama (Andean camelid) and auguries
- Rite of “Sankhu” (holy bread)
- “Q’ochurikuy” (Dances and music from all Peru)
Day 3.- Sacred Valley Tour and Train to Aguas Calientes:
The Sacred Valley Tour is an informative, persuasive, and descriptive full-day adventure through the Cusco region beginning at 7:30 a.m. We’ll pick you up from your hotel for one of the area’s most popular tours.
The Sacred Valley served as an agricultural, spiritual, and political center for the Inca Empire. Along its route, you’ll encounter numerous Inca and Pre-Inca sites, each rich in historical significance.
