Travel Information

TRAVEL GUIDE ABOUT WAQRAPUKARA TOUR

Embark on an unforgettable journey to Waqrapukara, often hailed as the ‘other Machu Picchu’. Tucked away high in the Peruvian Andes, this hidden gem offers a captivating blend of natural splendor and rich cultural history. As you venture along winding mountain trails, prepare to be awed by breathtaking vistas of deep canyons and the Apurimac River, and witness the astonishing architectural achievements of the ancient Inca civilization.

LOCATION

Waqrapukara is situated in the district of Acos, within the province of Acomayo, in the Cusco region, roughly a four-hour drive from the city of Cusco. Deeply nestled in the Southern Sierras, it rests at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,107 feet) above sea level. The journey itself is as captivating as the destination, guiding you through remote Andean communities and pristine landscapes that remain untouched by modern development.

HISTORY

The origins of Waqrapukara, meaning ‘horn-shaped fortress’ in Quechua, date back to the pre-Inca period. Its construction is attributed to the Qanchis, a civilization that thrived during the late Intermediate Period (1000-1400 AD). Later, the Incas recognized its strategic significance, annexing and expanding the site. Despite its historical importance, Waqrapukara remained relatively obscure until recent years due to its remote and challenging location. Today, it stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of Peru’s ancient civilizations, their profound geographical awareness, and their harmonious relationship with nature.

GETTING THERE

Visiting Waqrapukara necessitates a bit of planning, but this is part of the thrill. From Cusco, local buses depart daily for the town of Acomayo. From there, a colectivo (shared taxi) is available to the community of Huayki. At Huayki, a marked trail leads to Waqrapukara, a hike of approximately two hours. Given the high altitude, it is advisable to acclimatize in Cusco for a couple of days before embarking. Guided tours from Cusco are available, offering transportation, food, and insightful historical narratives. Regardless of your mode of transport, always show respect to local communities and the natural surroundings.

WEATHER

The weather at Waqrapukara is quite variable due to its high elevation. Generally, the dry season from May to October provides the best hiking conditions, with clear skies and mild weather. From November to April, during the rainy season, the landscapes become verdant, yet the trails can be slippery and challenging. Travelers should pack layers and prepare for rapid weather changes, with temperatures ranging from warm daytime highs to chilly nights. Always check weather forecasts before starting your journey, and adjust your plans as needed.

WHEN TO GO

The ideal time to visit Waqrapukara is typically from May to October, coinciding with the region’s dry season, which features clear skies and comfortable temperatures perfect for hiking. However, adventurous travelers who don’t mind occasional rain may find the rainy season (November to April) rewarding, as the landscape flourishes with lush greenery. Be prepared for unpredictable weather and challenging trail conditions during this period. Keep an eye on local forecasts and be ready to adapt your plans accordingly.

BIODIVERSITY

Waqrapukara’s rich biodiversity is another compelling reason for nature enthusiasts to visit. The region hosts diverse flora and fauna, with some species unique to the Peruvian Andes. Travelers might encounter the majestic Andean condor or discover plant species like the Puya Raimondii, also known as the Queen of the Andes. The area’s biodiversity not only enhances its visual allure but also plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance. Always observe wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing natural habitats to preserve these ecological treasures for future generations.

In addition to its natural beauty, Waqrapukara holds cultural significance for local communities. It is considered a sacred site by indigenous Andean groups who continue to perform rituals and ceremonies. Visitors are encouraged to respect these traditions and learn about the site’s history and significance from knowledgeable guides or community members. Supporting local businesses and sustainable tourism initiatives helps preserve the area’s cultural heritage and benefits the communities that reside here.

SAFETY

Safety is crucial when visiting Waqrapukara or any outdoor site. Hikers should wear comfortable, sturdy footwear suitable for rugged trails, carry ample water and energy-rich snacks, and bring essential gear such as a map, compass, first-aid kit, flashlight, and multi-tool. Stick to marked trails to minimize environmental impact and avoid getting lost. Avoid hiking alone, and always inform someone of your planned route and expected return. Be aware of altitude sickness risks when climbing in the Andes; acclimate properly and recognize the symptoms to respond quickly if necessary. Emergency services may be limited in remote areas, so be prepared to manage minor injuries and health issues independently. Prioritizing safety ensures a memorable and positive hiking experience.

Can I Opt For My Own Room?

You can opt for your own room, but it will incur an additional cost. Please note that you’ll be unable to have your own room during nights 3 to 5 when we will be hiking. For more details on opting for your own room, please contact us.

    Responsible travel...

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

    • Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.

    • Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites during our treks contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimize our environmental footprint by using biodegradable products.
