Travel Guide

Travel Guide on the Sacred Valley Tour

The Pisaq tour invites you into the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, perched high in the Andean mountains of Peru. As a significant archaeological site, Pisaq offers an illuminating view into the ancient Incan civilization. This tour guides you through the terraced fields, detailed stone structures, and a bustling marketplace alive with color and culture. This excursion not only delves deeply into Incan history but also provides breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below. The Pisaq tour is an essential experience for anyone visiting Peru, promising an unforgettable journey into the past.

Location of Pisaq:

Pisaq is conveniently situated about 33 kilometers northeast of Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. It is easily accessible via a scenic road that meanders through the Andean mountains, offering stunning views of the lush landscape. The Pisaq archaeological site itself is majestically perched on a hill at the entrance to the Sacred Valley, ensuring that every visitor is met with a breathtaking view of this ancient Incan stronghold against the rugged mountain backdrop.

History:

The history of Pisaq is deeply woven into the grandeur and eventual decline of the Inca Empire. Established around the same era as Machu Picchu in the 15th century, Pisaq was a key strategic outpost of the empire. The complex was ingeniously designed for multiple purposes—from its terraced fields used for agriculture to its temples and ceremonial sites dedicated to religion. The settlement was abandoned during the Spanish Conquest, with its ruins remaining as a silent testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Inca civilization. Today, Pisaq is not merely an archaeological site, but a living town resonating with the echoes of the past and the vibrant rhythms of the present.

Getting There:

The journey to Pisaq is an adventure in itself. You can hop on a bus from Cusco that navigates the winding roads of the Andean mountains. Buses depart from Terminal Terrestre in Cusco, with the journey lasting approximately one hour. Alternatively, you may hire a taxi or join a guided tour, which often includes transportation, a guide, and sometimes even meals. For the more adventurous, hiking from Cusco to Pisaq is an option, although it requires a reasonable level of fitness due to the altitude and steep paths. Regardless of your chosen method, the journey to Pisaq promises to be as memorable as the destination itself.

Weather in Pisaq:

Pisaq’s climate is generally mild and temperate, featuring a subtropical highland climate. Rainfall is common throughout the year, with the wettest months spanning November to March. During these months, hiking trails can be particularly challenging due to rain. The dry season, from May to September, is the optimal time to visit, as the weather is usually sunny with cool temperatures. However, even during this season, it is wise to carry a rain jacket, as unexpected showers can occur.

When to Go:

When planning your trip to Pisaq, it’s crucial to factor in the time of year. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September. This period offers sunny days and cool temperatures, ideal for exploring the archaeological site and the town. This season is also perfect for hiking due to infrequent rainfall. However, remember to carry a rain jacket, as showers can be sporadic. If visiting during the wet season, from November to March, be prepared for frequent rain showers and possibly more challenging hiking conditions due to wet trails. Nonetheless, the beauty of Pisaq remains unchanged, offering a captivating experience all year round.

The Market in Pisaq:

The market in Pisaq is a vibrant hub of local culture and commerce. Open every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, it boasts a vast array of stalls selling traditional Peruvian handicrafts, textiles, pottery, jewelry, and produce, a true feast for the eyes. Imbued with rich Andean tradition, the market is a testament to the skills and creativity of the local Quechua people. The market is famously known for its traditional vibrant ponchos and chullo hats, woven with intricate designs from alpaca or sheep wool. Additionally, it provides a unique opportunity to witness traditional bartering among the locals, a practice preserved over generations. Whether seeking a charming souvenir, sampling local delicacies, or simply soaking up the lively atmosphere, the market in Pisaq is a must-visit for any traveler to the region.

Safety:

Safety is paramount when exploring Pisaq’s diverse terrain and enjoying its various activities. Ensure you are equipped for the weather, which can be unpredictable due to high altitude. When trekking, wear sturdy shoes and carry essentials like water, snacks, and a map. If birdwatching or exploring nature trails, stay on marked paths to avoid disturbing wildlife or getting lost. Hiring a local guide is recommended for insights into the area’s unique biodiversity and ensuring a safe, enriching experience.
