Day 6: Explore Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco:

Machu Picchu

Book in advance to secure the best circuits for your Machu Picchu Citadel visit.

Today is the highlight of your trip: a visit to the magnificent citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. To preserve this UNESCO World Heritage site, the Peruvian government has implemented strict regulations, including 10 different visitor circuits. Circuits 1, 2, 3, and 4 are the most distinct. We highly recommend Circuits 2 or 3. Circuit 2 is the best option for most visitors as it includes the classic postcard viewpoint. Circuit 3 is nearly identical but skips this main viewpoint. It is crucial to book well in advance to secure Circuit 2 for the most complete experience.

Your day will start early at your hotel. While waking up early can be tiring, the experience is well worth it. You’ll take a packed breakfast and leave larger luggage at the hotel, carrying only a small backpack with essentials like sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a hat, your camera, your original passport (and student ID, if applicable), and water. A short five-minute walk will take you to the bus station. The first bus leaves at 5:30 AM, but you should arrive earlier to queue, as seating is first-come, first-served.

The scenic bus ride to the entrance of Machu Picchu takes about 25 minutes. We recommend using the public restrooms (cost: 2 soles) before entering. Once inside, if you have Circuit 2, you’ll head to the main viewpoint near the Watchtower. If you have Circuit 3, your tour will begin at the agricultural terraces. At the start, you’ll have time for iconic photos and a 15-30 minute introductory talk on Machu Picchu’s history.

Your guided tour will last about 2.5 to 3 hours, leading you through temples, palaces, terraces, and fountains, with plenty of photo opportunities. Afterward, you will have about 30 minutes of restricted free time. If you wish to revisit the main viewpoint, you must purchase a separate ticket for Circuit 1 in advance. Visitors who have booked the Huayna Picchu mountain climb will proceed to its entrance. The climb takes approximately 45 minutes up, with 30 minutes at the summit, and another 45 minutes to descend. This ticket is limited to 400 people per day and must be reserved well in advance.

After your tour (and any optional hikes), you will exit Machu Picchu and take the bus back to Aguas Calientes. We recommend aiming to be back around 1 PM for a final group lunch (not included). Your Expedition train to Ollantaytambo is scheduled to depart around 2:55 PM. This comfortable train has large windows, perfect for taking photos of the passing scenery. An upgrade to the Vistadome train is available, which departs later and includes onboard entertainment.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our transport will be waiting to take you back to Cusco. From there, smaller vehicles will drop you off directly at your hotel or Airbnb, with an estimated arrival time of around 8 PM.

Travel Information

Essential info About 6-day Choquequirao Trekking.

About Arriving in Cusco

Our 6-day Choquequirao trekking adventure begins in the vibrant city of Cusco, Peru. Upon arrival, it’s important to note that the airport caters exclusively to domestic flights. This means international travelers must go through customs in Lima before continuing to Cusco, requiring them to collect their luggage and check it in again, even if it’s the same airline. The most efficient way to reach Cusco is by plane, with multiple airlines available; while LAN Airlines may be pricier, it offers a wider flight selection.

Be mindful of the potential for flight disruptions due to Cusco’s high altitude and changing weather conditions. For those considering overland travel, a lengthy bus journey from Lima—lasting up to 20 hours—is available, but we recommend opting for more manageable routes from nearby cities like Puno or Arequipa.

About Briefing

Your trekking briefing will take place the evening before your hike at 6:30 p.m. This session will be conducted either at your hotel or our offices, as specified in your confirmation email. It is an excellent opportunity to raise any questions or concerns and to ensure you have the proper gear for your trek.

Weather in Cusco

Cusco experiences distinct wet (November to March) and dry (April to October) seasons, yet the weather remains unpredictable—making it wise to prepare for rain regardless of the season. At “Sunrise Peru Trek,” we pride ourselves on promising remarkable experiences, come rain or shine. While it may still be beautiful during rainy spells, unexpected weather can occur during dry months; thus, it is essential to pack appropriately and remain adaptable.

Physical Preparation

Preparing for the Choquequirao trek entails more than just packing; physical conditioning is crucial. Given the moderate to challenging difficulty levels of our treks and the high altitudes involved, maintaining a good fitness level is necessary. Regular aerobic activities like running, cycling, or swimming will enhance your endurance, while strength training exercises such as squats and lunges will prepare your muscles for the demands of hiking with a backpack over uneven terrain. Proper hydration and nutrition in the lead-up to your trek will significantly enhance your comfort and performance on the trail.

Responsible Trekking

As nature enthusiasts, we prioritize the preservation of our planet’s stunning landscapes. Our treks incorporate responsible trekking practices, focusing on minimizing our environmental impact and supporting local communities. We encourage trekkers to adhere to Leave No Trace principles—carrying out all trash, sticking to designated paths, and respecting local wildlife and culture. By embracing responsible trekking, we help ensure that these breathtaking sites remain unspoiled for future adventurers.

About the Altitude

The challenge of high altitude, especially in Cusco, should not be underestimated. Higher altitudes mean less oxygen, increasing the risk of altitude sickness. We strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco prior to your trek. Symptoms to watch for include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and sleep disturbances. Should you experience severe symptoms, please contact our office immediately. To mitigate the risks of altitude sickness, it’s best to limit caffeine and alcohol, avoid smoking, and consult with your doctor about medications such as acetazolamide if necessary.

Porter Staff Included

Our expeditions include porters who are responsible for transporting all gear and setting up camp. Each trekker is allowed a personal travel bag, which cannot exceed 7 kg (14 lbs), including both a sleeping bag and air mattress.

Duffel Bag for 6-Day Choquequirao Trekking + Machu Picchu

On the night before your trek, a duffel bag will be given to you to pack your clothing for the duration of your hike. This bag is limited to a maximum weight of 7 kg (15.4 lbs) and will be transported by our skilled horsemen as you trek from site to site, while separate horses will carry your food and camping equipment. Please note, you won’t have access to your items in the duffel bag until the end of each day’s trek, as the horsemen will travel ahead of the group.

Travel Insurance:

To safeguard your travel investment, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Obtaining coverage is both advisable and straightforward before your departure.

Booking

Reserving the 6-Day Choquequirao Trekking + Machu Picchu experience with us has never been more convenient. Simply provide the following required information and a US$ 200 deposit to secure your tour. The remaining balance can be paid upon your arrival in Cusco at our offices.

FAQ

FAQs About Choquequirao Trekking

How challenging is the Choquequirao Trek?

Embarking on the Choquequirao Trek is considered a formidable endeavor due to its rugged terrain and steep inclines. Being in excellent physical condition is essential, or alternatively, one might consider an extended itinerary to mitigate the exertion. While comparing it to other treks in the Cusco region, it’s key to highlight that Choquequirao is not regarded as a high-altitude trek. The apex of this adventure is at the Choquequirao ruins, perched at 3,050 meters (10,007 feet).

This trek is a rigorous test of endurance, as trekkers must descend and ascend 1,500 meters, retracing their steps along the same path. Despite its daunting nature, the awe-inspiring landscape renders it a truly exceptional journey.

What fitness level do you recommend for this trek?

Even seasoned athletes will find the trek to Choquequirao a formidable challenge! Anyone contemplating this journey should commit to a structured fitness regimen. Many older individuals have successfully completed the trek; however, they tend to be exceptionally fit and well-prepared. Those not in peak physical condition should consult fitness and medical professionals to devise a customized training program. Remember, the primary challenge of Choquequirao is the steepness of the trails.

What’s the ideal time of year for Choquequirao trekking?

The most favorable time for the Choquequirao trek, combined with a Machu Picchu tour, is during the dry winter months in the Andes, from May to October. During this period, rainfall is minimal, although temperatures can drop significantly. Unlike other high-altitude treks, the chilly nights on this trail are manageable, but preparation for cooler evenings at the Choquequirao ruins is advisable. The rainy season from November to March makes the operation of tours unwise due to safety concerns related to slippery, unpredictable trails.

How many hours will we hike each day?

Daily hiking times can vary, but generally, anticipate approximately 6-7 hours of hiking each day, contingent on your fitness level, the group’s pace, and individual preferences, such as taking additional time for photography. It is important to note that each day’s trekking duration may be influenced by the trail conditions and group dynamics.

Can I charge my devices at the campsites?

Absolutely! You will have the opportunity to charge your devices at lodges, typically at the end of each trekking day. However, charges may apply, so it is prudent to arrive in Cusco with all your devices fully charged.

What can we expect in terms of food and accommodation on the Choquequirao Trekking + Machu Picchu Tour?

During the Choquequirao trek, you’ll spend four nights in basic lodges or campsites, with a skilled field team managing logistics, setting up tents, and ensuring access to clean water for washing. The quality of equipment is vital for a pleasant trekking experience. On the final night, accommodation will be in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, adjacent to Machu Picchu. Meals will be abundant and nutritionally balanced, prepared by a professional chef and an assistant.

Our chefs undergo annual training to ensure your meals are delightful rather than mundane trail food. We can accommodate a variety of dietary needs with proper notice, frequently catering to vegetarian guests and adept at preparing diverse vegetarian and vegan dishes.

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required.
