Detailed Tour Itinerary

DETAILED TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Journey Through the Sacred Valley

Cusco – Pisac – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

Your two-day adventure begins with a deep dive into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a region of unparalleled beauty and historical significance. More than just a transit route, the valley offers a transition into the Andean way of life, preparing your spirit for the wonders of Machu Picchu.

07:30 AM | The Adventure Commences

Your journey starts with a personal pickup from your Cusco hotel in a comfortable private vehicle. As we leave the city behind, we wind through the mountains toward the Pisac Market. This is your first true taste of Andean culture—a vibrant kaleidoscope of hand-woven textiles, intricate jewelry, and fresh high-altitude produce. It’s the perfect place to find a unique souvenir and witness the living heritage of the Quechua people.

Morning | The Heights of Pisac

After the market, we ascend to the Pisaq Archaeological Site. Perched high above the valley, these ruins feature some of the most impressive agricultural terraces in the world. As you walk among the ancient stone structures, your guide will reveal how the Incas mastered the steep terrain to create a thriving civilization. The panoramic views from this vantage point are simply breathtaking.

Mid-Day | A Culinary Oasis in Urubamba

We continue our drive to the town of Urubamba, the heart of the valley. Here, we pause for a traditional Andean lunch.

  • The Flavors: Savor local delicacies such as freshly caught mountain trout or hearty quinoa-based dishes.

  • The Experience: Relax in a charming restaurant setting, enjoying the warm hospitality that defines the Peruvian highlands. This is a moment to recharge and reflect on the morning’s discoveries.

Afternoon | The Living Inca City: Ollantaytambo

Next, we explore Ollantaytambo, a site often referred to as a “Living Inca City.” This massive fortress showcases the incredible engineering prowess of the Incas:

  • The Sun Temple: Marvel at massive monoliths meticulously carved and fitted together without a drop of mortar.

  • The Terraces: Climb the steep stone steps for a commanding view of the town below, which still retains its original Incan street plan.

  • History in Every Stone: Walk pathways once traveled by Incan royalty and feel the weight of centuries in this awe-inspiring monument.

04:30 PM | The Scenic Rails to the Cloud Forest

As the afternoon sun begins to glow, we board a scenic train for a 1-hour and 45-minute journey to Aguas Calientes.

  • The View: You’ll travel alongside the shimmering Urubamba River, watching as the high-altitude peaks give way to the lush greenery of the high jungle.

  • The Destination: Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town), we’ll escort you to your pre-arranged hotel. This charming, pedestrian-only town is the gateway to the world’s wonder. Settle in, enjoy a peaceful dinner, and rest up—tomorrow, you conquer the “Lost City.”

🔍 Trip Insight for 2026

Why we start at 7:30 AM: By departing early in a private vehicle, we stay ahead of the larger bus crowds, giving you a more intimate and peaceful experience at the ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Huayna Picchu – Cusco

Today is the day you stand atop a World Wonder. After a restful night in the cloud forest, you are ready to witness the mist rising over the “Lost City” and conquer the most iconic peak in the Andes.

🌅 The Morning Ascent

Your day begins with a nourishing breakfast at your hotel before a short, 10-minute walk to the bus station. From there, we board the shuttle for a 25-minute scenic ascent. As the bus winds up the mountain, keep your camera ready—the views of the surrounding peaks and the Urubamba River far below are the perfect prelude to the sanctuary.

🏛️ Guided Exploration: Circuits 1 & 2

Upon entering the gates, your expert guide will lead you on a profound 2 to 3-hour journey through history. By following Circuit 1 or 2, we ensure you experience the most complete and iconic version of the Citadel.

Highlights of your guided tour include:

⛰️ The Challenge: Conquering Huayna Picchu

After immersing yourself in the city’s history, it’s time for the ultimate adrenaline rush. The ascent of Huayna Picchu is a legendary experience reserved for the adventurous.

  • The Climb: A rewarding 90-minute ascent through original Incan stairways and narrow trails.

  • The Summit: At the top, you are rewarded with a 360° panoramic view. You’ll stand eye-to-eye with the majestic peaks of Salkantay, Pumasillo, and La Veronica, while the entire citadel of Machu Picchu sits like a miniature model at your feet.

  • The Descent: A careful 45-minute return journey, allowing you to soak in the scale of the landscape one last time.

  • Private Transfer: Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, your private vehicle will be waiting to whisk you comfortably back to your hotel in Cusco.

By the time you reach Cusco, you won’t just have photos; you’ll have a profound connection to a civilization that lived among the clouds.

Packing List

🎒 Pack Like a Pro: Your Essential Guide for Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu

Recommended bag packWhat to Bring for a 2-Day Machupicchu and Huaynapicchu Tour

Preparing for your 2-day adventure to Machu Picchu and the towering heights of Huayna Picchu is half the fun! Since you’ll be moving through different microclimates—from the crisp Andean air to the humid cloud forest—packing smart is key.

Here is our curated list of everything you’ll need for a comfortable and unforgettable journey.

🛂 The Non-Negotiables

  • Original Passport: This is your golden ticket. You cannot enter Machu Picchu or board the train without your physical, original passport.

  • The Right Bag: Use a light backpack (20L to 30L). It’s perfect for carrying your essentials while remaining light enough for the steep climb up Huayna Picchu.

🥾 Gear & Clothing: Think Layers!

The weather in the Andes can change in a heartbeat. The secret to staying comfortable is layering.

  • Footwear: Choose comfortable trekking shoes or high-quality trainers with good grip. You’ll be navigating ancient stone steps that can be slippery!

  • The Base: A light, moisture-wicking shirt and long, comfortable hiking pants (breathable fabric is best).

  • The Insulation: A sweater or fleece for the chilly early mornings and late evenings.

  • Outer Shell: A wind jacket to cut the breeze at the summits.

  • Rain Readiness: A lightweight rain jacket or poncho. In the cloud forest, a “passing shower” can happen any time of year!

☀️ Health & Skin Protection

The sun is stronger at high altitudes, and the local “sand flies” are famously persistent.

  • Sun Protection: High-SPF sunblock and polarized sunglasses are a must to protect against high-altitude UV rays.

  • Insect Repellent: Essential! The small sand flies in Machu Picchu are tiny but mighty.

  • Personal First Aid: Pack a small kit with Band-Aids (for potential blisters), any personal medications, and perhaps some altitude snacks like coca leaves or ginger sweets.

📸 Capture the Magic

  • Camera & Memory: Ensure your battery is fully charged and you have plenty of space on your memory card. You’ll want to capture the classic “Citadel shot” and the breathtaking views from the top of Huayna Picchu.

  • Hydration: Bring a reusable water bottle (1–2 liters). Staying hydrated is the best way to ward off altitude fatigue.

  • Smart Snacking: Pack your favorite energy bars, nuts, or dried fruit. While you can find snacks in Aguas Calientes, they are much more budget-friendly if bought beforehand!

⭐ Pro-Tip: When climbing Huayna Picchu, keep your hands free! Ensure everything fits inside your backpack so you can use the handrails and steady yourself on the “Death Stairs.”

🏛️ The New Machu Picchu Circuits

To preserve the site, Machu Picchu now operates with four distinct circuits. For the Huayna Picchu hike (Circuit 4), you will experience the most extensive route:

  • Lower Sector Highlights: Agricultural terraces, Inca homes, and ceremonial fountains.

  • Sacred Sites: Includes the majestic Temple of the Condor.

📺 Check out our video guide on the website to see the unique views offered by each circuit!

🌡️ Weather & Altitude: Staying Prepared

The Climate: Machu Picchu is located in the high jungle. This means the weather is “unpredictable.”

  • Mornings: Cool and crisp (wear layers).

  • Afternoons: Warm and humid, with potential tropical showers—especially from November to March.

  • Must-Have: A sturdy rain poncho and waterproof footwear.

Acclimatization: Cusco sits at 3,400m (11,150ft). To avoid altitude sickness (headaches or nausea):

  1. Rest: Arrive in Cusco at least 2 days before your tour.

  2. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and traditional Coca Tea.

  3. Avoid: Heavy meals, alcohol, and smoking during your first 48 hours.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Insurance

Your safety is our priority. Our guides are experts in high-altitude navigation and Andean history, managing all logistics so you can stay immersed in the magic.

Travel Insurance: We consider travel insurance non-negotiable. It protects you against trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost baggage. It’s a small investment for total peace of mind while exploring the globe.

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

    • Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.

    • Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites during our treks contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimize our environmental footprint by using biodegradable products.
