FREQÜENTLY ASKED QÜESTIONS
Can I change the date of my flight tickets if I want to extend my trip?
Yes, it is possible to change your flight tickets as long as there are available seats on the plane. Keep in mind that some airlines may require an additional fee of approximately US$20.00 to make a date change.
Is the Inca Trail trek difficult, and do I need to be fit?
The Inca Trail is a physically demanding 45 km (26 mile) hike through mountainous terrain, demanding 5-7 hours of trekking each day at high altitudes, reaching up to 4,200 meters above sea level. Particularly challenging is the 1,200 meter ascent on the second day. It is crucial to be in good physical condition and acclimated to the altitude. Spend 2 or 3 days in Cusco (3,400m) beforehand to adjust, while exploring nearby attractions. Adequate preparation is key, including regular exercise, such as daily walks of 15 km, leading up to the trek. Most participants successfully complete the trek, although a small number encounter issues. Those with heart, respiratory, knee, or back issues should refrain from attempting the trek.
Is there a minimum or maximum age for the tour?
There is no strict age limit; however, travelers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Those over 50 are advised to consult a physician to ensure they are fit for the trek. Having travel insurance is strongly recommended.
How far in advance do I need to book a tour?
Bookings should be made 3 to 4 months in advance due to the restricted capacity of 200 tourists and 300 porters permitted on the trail daily. For available dates, please call +51 950 313131 or +51 984 734633.
What happens if I am very slow or want to see more?
You will always be accompanied by a guide, ensuring you are not left behind. The guides provide information on distances and timing after each rest break, allowing you to proceed at a relaxed pace. This approach gives you the time to enjoy and learn about the Inca sites and surrounding environment fully.
Where can I store the bags that I do not need to take on the Inca Trail?
Your unneeded bags can be stored at your hotel in Cusco. Most hotels provide complimentary luggage deposit services if you plan to return there post-trek. You may also use the hotel safe for valuables, but it is essential to carry your passport and some emergency money with you.
Should I hire an extra porter?
Approximately 30% of trekkers hire an additional porter. A ‘half porter’ service for the 4-day trek costs US$70 and caters for carrying up to 6 kg of personal items. Porters manage their loads independently, so you will still need a day pack for essentials like water, snacks, a camera, a warm sweater, and a rain jacket.
How do I make a payment/deposit?
A non-refundable deposit of US$200.00 per person is required for the Inca Trail tour. Payments can be made via WESTERN UNION or DIRECT DEPOSIT, both secured methods in Peru. Remaining balances are payable in cash upon Cusco arrival in either US Dollars or Peruvian Soles.
Why do I need to send a deposit?
Deposits are utilized for covering official reservation fees, which include tourist and porter entry fees, taxes, and securing essential personnel such as chefs and porters.
Can I use trekking poles or a walking stick on the Inca Trail?
Trekking poles are advisable, especially on arduous sections. Rubber tips are necessary to protect the Incan stone paths. Eco-friendly options, like trekking poles made from dry bamboo available in Cusco, are recommended.
What is the weather like on the Inca Trail?
Conditions vary due to traveling through mountains and cloud forest zones. Prepare for diverse weather: the rainy season from November to May, and the dry season, June through October, characterized by cool nights and warm, dry days.
How much drinking water do I need to carry?
Initially, bring one liter of drinkable water per person. Additional water is purchasable along the trail, and we supply refillable water post-lunch and at mealtimes, eliminating the need for purification tablets.
Can I have a private room in the hotel?
Yes, private accommodation is available for an additional US$25.00 per night.
Can I climb Huayna Picchu (optional)?
Accessing Huayna Picchu involves separate fees due to limited ticket availability. A combined Machu Picchu – Huayna Picchu ticket costs US$ 70. Staying overnight in Aguas Calientes for the ascent offers better value. Additional costs for lodging and return bus travel apply.
