Essential Info

ℹ️ Essential Information: 4-Day Lares Trek & Machu Picchu

Preparation is key to an unforgettable trekking adventure. Here is everything you need to know to plan your arrival, manage your gear, and stay healthy at altitude.

✈️ Arriving in Cusco

Cusco’s airport (CUZ) exclusively handles domestic flights.

  • International Arrivals: If arriving by air, you must first pass through customs in Lima (LIM). Even if your flight to Cusco is on the same airline, you must retrieve your bags in Lima and re-check them for your domestic flight to Cusco.
  • Flights: Flying is the most preferred method of arrival, with multiple airlines offering service. Note that flight disruptions and cancellations are not uncommon due to Cusco’s high altitude and variable weather conditions.
  • Buses: While possible, the bus journey from Lima can take up to 20 hours and is not recommended. Traveling from nearby cities like Puno or Arequipa is much more practical.

🏔️ Altitude Acclimatization & Health

Altitude sickness is a common concern in Cusco (3,400 masl) due to lower oxygen levels.

  • Acclimatization: We strongly suggest arriving in Cusco at least two days before your trek departure to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
  • Symptoms: Mild symptoms often mimic a hangover or flu, including headaches and nausea. Avoid strenuous activity during your first 48 hours.
  • Prevention: Stay well-hydrated. Avoid excessive coffee, alcohol, smoking, and sleeping pills, as these can worsen dehydration and impair oxygen absorption.
  • Medication: Consult your doctor about preventative medications like Acetazolamide (Diamox) or Dexamethasone.

🗣️ Pre-Trek Briefing

We cordially invite you to our essential pre-trek briefing:

  • Time & Date: The session takes place at 6:00 PM on the evening before your trek departure.
  • Venue: The location (either our official office or your hotel) will be confirmed upon your arrival in Cusco.
  • Purpose: This is your opportune moment to meet your guide, resolve any uncertainties, and receive persuasive insights into the trek’s itinerary, expectations, and invaluable tips.

🛄 Luggage & Porters

We provide a streamlined system for managing your gear.

  • Duffel Bag: During the briefing, you will receive a duffel bag for your trekking gear. Our skilled horsemen will reliably transport this bag between campsites.
  • Weight Limit: The maximum weight limit for your personal duffel bag is 7 kg (15.4 lbs). This limit must include your sleeping bag and air mattress.
  • Access: You will not have access to the items in your duffel bag until the end of each day’s trek, as our team and horses typically lead the group.
  • Porters Included: Our dedicated team of porters handles all camp setup and equipment transport, ensuring a smooth experience.
  • Excess Luggage: You have the option to securely store any excess items at your Cusco hotel or with us. Your bags will be promptly returned upon your return from the trek.

🌧️ The Weather

The weather in the Cusco region is highly variable, often shifting rapidly.

  • Dry Season: Generally runs from April to October, but rain is still possible.
  • Preparation: You may experience different “seasons” throughout your trek! Layering is essential. Pack a quality waterproof jacket, pants, and a poncho.
  • Cold: Don’t forget a warm wool hat, gloves (for cold or humid conditions), and a cozy yet portable down jacket for the chilly nights.

🛡️ Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a small investment that provides enormous protection. We strongly recommend securing travel insurance before you set off on your journey.

  • It acts as a safety net, covering unforeseen circumstances such as:

    • Medical emergencies (especially crucial for altitude-related issues).

    • Trip cancellations or interruptions.

    • Lost or delayed baggage.

Cancellation Policy

⚠️ Important Policy: Cancellation and Modification

Please read this section carefully before booking the 4-Day Lares Trek & Machu Picchu.

This trek is subject to a strict, non-refundable, and non-modifiable policy.

We regret to inform you that once a booking is confirmed:

  • Non-Refundable: Any cancellations will not result in a refund of the amount paid.
  • Non-Modifiable: We cannot process any requests to modify the dates, route, or traveler names under any circumstances.

This strict policy is in place due to the non-transferable nature of the official permits (including Machu Picchu entry) and train tickets required for this trek, which must be secured far in advance.

We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation and interruption, as this is the only way to protect your investment against unforeseen circumstances.
