Day 6: Explore Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco:

Machu Picchu

Book in advance to secure the best circuits for your Machu Picchu Citadel visit.

Today is the highlight of your trip: a visit to the magnificent citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. To preserve this UNESCO World Heritage site, the Peruvian government has implemented strict regulations, including 10 different visitor circuits. Circuits 1, 2, 3, and 4 are the most distinct. We highly recommend Circuits 2 or 3. Circuit 2 is the best option for most visitors as it includes the classic postcard viewpoint. Circuit 3 is nearly identical but skips this main viewpoint. It is crucial to book well in advance to secure Circuit 2 for the most complete experience.

Your day will start early at your hotel. While waking up early can be tiring, the experience is well worth it. You’ll take a packed breakfast and leave larger luggage at the hotel, carrying only a small backpack with essentials like sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a hat, your camera, your original passport (and student ID, if applicable), and water. A short five-minute walk will take you to the bus station. The first bus leaves at 5:30 AM, but you should arrive earlier to queue, as seating is first-come, first-served.

The scenic bus ride to the entrance of Machu Picchu takes about 25 minutes. We recommend using the public restrooms (cost: 2 soles) before entering. Once inside, if you have Circuit 2, you’ll head to the main viewpoint near the Watchtower. If you have Circuit 3, your tour will begin at the agricultural terraces. At the start, you’ll have time for iconic photos and a 15-30 minute introductory talk on Machu Picchu’s history.

Your guided tour will last about 2.5 to 3 hours, leading you through temples, palaces, terraces, and fountains, with plenty of photo opportunities. Afterward, you will have about 30 minutes of restricted free time. If you wish to revisit the main viewpoint, you must purchase a separate ticket for Circuit 1 in advance. Visitors who have booked the Huayna Picchu mountain climb will proceed to its entrance. The climb takes approximately 45 minutes up, with 30 minutes at the summit, and another 45 minutes to descend. This ticket is limited to 400 people per day and must be reserved well in advance.

After your tour (and any optional hikes), you will exit Machu Picchu and take the bus back to Aguas Calientes. We recommend aiming to be back around 1 PM for a final group lunch (not included). Your Expedition train to Ollantaytambo is scheduled to depart around 2:55 PM. This comfortable train has large windows, perfect for taking photos of the passing scenery. An upgrade to the Vistadome train is available, which departs later and includes onboard entertainment.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our transport will be waiting to take you back to Cusco. From there, smaller vehicles will drop you off directly at your hotel or Airbnb, with an estimated arrival time of around 8 PM.

Travel Information

Essential info About 6-day Choquequirao Trekking.

About Arriving in Cusco

Our 6-day Choquequirao trekking adventure begins in the vibrant city of Cusco, Peru. Upon arrival, it’s important to note that the airport caters exclusively to domestic flights. This means international travelers must go through customs in Lima before continuing to Cusco, requiring them to collect their luggage and check it in again, even if it’s the same airline. The most efficient way to reach Cusco is by plane, with multiple airlines available; while LAN Airlines may be pricier, it offers a wider flight selection.

Be mindful of the potential for flight disruptions due to Cusco’s high altitude and changing weather conditions. For those considering overland travel, a lengthy bus journey from Lima—lasting up to 20 hours—is available, but we recommend opting for more manageable routes from nearby cities like Puno or Arequipa.

About Briefing

Your trekking briefing will take place the evening before your hike at 6:30 p.m. This session will be conducted either at your hotel or our offices, as specified in your confirmation email. It is an excellent opportunity to raise any questions or concerns and to ensure you have the proper gear for your trek.

Weather in Cusco

Cusco experiences distinct wet (November to March) and dry (April to October) seasons, yet the weather remains unpredictable—making it wise to prepare for rain regardless of the season. At “Sunrise Peru Trek,” we pride ourselves on promising remarkable experiences, come rain or shine. While it may still be beautiful during rainy spells, unexpected weather can occur during dry months; thus, it is essential to pack appropriately and remain adaptable.

Physical Preparation

Preparing for the Choquequirao trek entails more than just packing; physical conditioning is crucial. Given the moderate to challenging difficulty levels of our treks and the high altitudes involved, maintaining a good fitness level is necessary. Regular aerobic activities like running, cycling, or swimming will enhance your endurance, while strength training exercises such as squats and lunges will prepare your muscles for the demands of hiking with a backpack over uneven terrain. Proper hydration and nutrition in the lead-up to your trek will significantly enhance your comfort and performance on the trail.

Responsible Trekking

As nature enthusiasts, we prioritize the preservation of our planet’s stunning landscapes. Our treks incorporate responsible trekking practices, focusing on minimizing our environmental impact and supporting local communities. We encourage trekkers to adhere to Leave No Trace principles—carrying out all trash, sticking to designated paths, and respecting local wildlife and culture. By embracing responsible trekking, we help ensure that these breathtaking sites remain unspoiled for future adventurers.

About the Altitude

The challenge of high altitude, especially in Cusco, should not be underestimated. Higher altitudes mean less oxygen, increasing the risk of altitude sickness. We strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco prior to your trek. Symptoms to watch for include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and sleep disturbances. Should you experience severe symptoms, please contact our office immediately. To mitigate the risks of altitude sickness, it’s best to limit caffeine and alcohol, avoid smoking, and consult with your doctor about medications such as acetazolamide if necessary.

Porter Staff Included

Our expeditions include porters who are responsible for transporting all gear and setting up camp. Each trekker is allowed a personal travel bag, which cannot exceed 7 kg (14 lbs), including both a sleeping bag and air mattress.

Duffel Bag for 6-Day Choquequirao Trekking + Machu Picchu

On the night before your trek, a duffel bag will be given to you to pack your clothing for the duration of your hike. This bag is limited to a maximum weight of 7 kg (15.4 lbs) and will be transported by our skilled horsemen as you trek from site to site, while separate horses will carry your food and camping equipment. Please note, you won’t have access to your items in the duffel bag until the end of each day’s trek, as the horsemen will travel ahead of the group.

Travel Insurance:

To safeguard your travel investment, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Obtaining coverage is both advisable and straightforward before your departure.

Booking

Reserving the 6-Day Choquequirao Trekking + Machu Picchu experience with us has never been more convenient. Simply provide the following required information and a US$ 200 deposit to secure your tour. The remaining balance can be paid upon your arrival in Cusco at our offices.

  • Personal information (your full name, exactly as it appears in your passport).

FAQ

FAQs About Choquequirao Trekking

How challenging is the Choquequirao Trek?

Embarking on the Choquequirao Trek is considered a formidable endeavor due to its rugged terrain and steep inclines. Being in excellent physical condition is essential, or alternatively, one might consider an extended itinerary to mitigate the exertion. While comparing it to other treks in the Cusco region, it’s key to highlight that Choquequirao is not regarded as a high-altitude trek. The apex of this adventure is at the Choquequirao ruins, perched at 3,050 meters (10,007 feet).

This trek is a rigorous test of endurance, as trekkers must descend and ascend 1,500 meters, retracing their steps along the same path. Despite its daunting nature, the awe-inspiring landscape renders it a truly exceptional journey.

What fitness level do you recommend for this trek?

Even seasoned athletes will find the trek to Choquequirao a formidable challenge! Anyone contemplating this journey should commit to a structured fitness regimen. Many older individuals have successfully completed the trek; however, they tend to be exceptionally fit and well-prepared. Those not in peak physical condition should consult fitness and medical professionals to devise a customized training program. Remember, the primary challenge of Choquequirao is the steepness of the trails.

What’s the ideal time of year for Choquequirao trekking?

The most favorable time for the Choquequirao trek, combined with a Machu Picchu tour, is during the dry winter months in the Andes, from May to October. During this period, rainfall is minimal, although temperatures can drop significantly. Unlike other high-altitude treks, the chilly nights on this trail are manageable, but preparation for cooler evenings at the Choquequirao ruins is advisable. The rainy season from November to March makes the operation of tours unwise due to safety concerns related to slippery, unpredictable trails.

How many hours will we hike each day?

Daily hiking times can vary, but generally, anticipate approximately 6-7 hours of hiking each day, contingent on your fitness level, the group’s pace, and individual preferences, such as taking additional time for photography. It is important to note that each day’s trekking duration may be influenced by the trail conditions and group dynamics.

Can I charge my devices at the campsites?

Absolutely! You will have the opportunity to charge your devices at lodges, typically at the end of each trekking day. However, charges may apply, so it is prudent to arrive in Cusco with all your devices fully charged.

What can we expect in terms of food and accommodation on the Choquequirao Trekking + Machu Picchu Tour?

During the Choquequirao trek, you’ll spend four nights in basic lodges or campsites, with a skilled field team managing logistics, setting up tents, and ensuring access to clean water for washing. The quality of equipment is vital for a pleasant trekking experience. On the final night, accommodation will be in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, adjacent to Machu Picchu. Meals will be abundant and nutritionally balanced, prepared by a professional chef and an assistant.

Our chefs undergo annual training to ensure your meals are delightful rather than mundane trail food. We can accommodate a variety of dietary needs with proper notice, frequently catering to vegetarian guests and adept at preparing diverse vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Essential Information

Essential Info About the 4-day Choquequirao Trek

Arriving in Cusco:

Welcome to the starting point of your thrilling adventure—the Choquequirao Trek in beautiful Cusco, Peru. As you plan your journey, note that Cusco’s airport is designed for domestic flights only. International travelers will first need to arrive in Lima to clear customs. Even if your onward flight to Cusco is on the same day with the same airline, you’ll need to collect and recheck your luggage in Lima. Though air travel remains the top choice to reach Cusco, offering various airlines, LAN Airlines usually provides the most flights, albeit at a slightly higher cost.

Be aware that Cusco’s elevated location can sometimes cause flight delays or cancellations due to weather conditions. If you’re considering other options, a scenic bus ride may be appealing, but anticipate a lengthy journey of up to 20 hours from Lima. Alternatively, traveling from nearby cities like Puno or Arequipa might offer a more comfortable, leisurely experience.

About Your Luggage:

Feel free to leave any extra items securely at your lodge in Cusco or with us before embarking on your trek. Rest easy knowing your belongings will be safely stored throughout your journey and returned to you promptly upon your return. For easy handling, please ensure each piece of luggage is tagged for identification.

About the Altitude:

Cusco’s high elevation can present a unique challenge due to the potential risk of altitude sickness. The thinner air at these heights may make it harder to maintain normal oxygen levels. To fully prepare, we recommend spending at least two days acclimating in Cusco before venturing into the Andes. Be mindful of symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, reduced appetite, nausea, dizziness, or sleep disturbances, similar to those of a hangover or the flu. If severe symptoms occur, please contact our team for immediate medical support.

To keep yourself in optimal condition, reduce your intake of coffee and alcohol, as they may dehydrate you, and avoid smoking, which impacts oxygen absorption. Refrain from using sleeping pills as they might cause shallow breathing while you’re asleep. It’s advisable to consult with your doctor regarding altitude sickness prevention, which might include medications like acetazolamide and dexamethasone.

Weather:

Cusco’s weather is full of surprises, with even the dry period from April to October liable to sudden showers or bursts of sunshine. Be sure to pack essentials such as a waterproof jacket, pants, and a poncho, and don’t forget those gloves for cooler or wet days! Prepare for a variety of temperatures by bringing layered clothing so you can adjust as the weather changes. A warm, lightweight padded jacket is perfect for keeping cozy when the sun goes down.

Porter Staff Included:

We strive to make your trekking adventure as seamless and enjoyable as possible, thanks to our amazing porters who expertly manage your gear. During your pre-trek briefing, we’ll provide you with a duffel bag for your Choquequirao Trek essentials. Make sure to keep each bag under 7 kg / 14 lbs, including your sleeping bag and air mattress for your comfort. Our porters are dedicated to enhancing your trek experience, and additional porters are available if you need assistance with extra belongings or prefer to lighten your load.

Daypack:

Your daypack will become an indispensable companion on this journey, carrying essentials like snacks, water, sunscreen, a camera, rain gear, and other must-haves. Choose one that fits comfortably with adjustable straps, as you’ll be wearing it throughout the day. Ensure it meets your needs while being light enough to carry with ease. Think of it as your trusty sidekick—keep it manageable.

Duffel Bag for the 4-day Choquequirao Trek:

We provide a compact duffel bag for your trek clothing, with a weight limit of 7 kg / 15.4 lbs. Our horsemen will transport your bag from one location to the next while other horses carry food and camping supplies. Please note, access to your items in the duffel bag is only available at the end of each day’s trek, as the horses and horsemen typically proceed ahead of the group.

Travel Insurance:

Consider travel insurance as your safeguard—a vital part of any adventure. Whether it’s a brief getaway, an essential business trip, or a dream vacation, unforeseen events can arise. With travel insurance, you’re equipped to handle delays, cancellations, medical issues, or lost luggage with confidence. We strongly recommend securing travel insurance before your adventure. It is straightforward and cost-effective, ensuring your travel investment is protected. Step into the unknown with confidence and enjoy peace of mind by choosing travel insurance today.

FAQ

Choquequirao Trek FAQs

Is the Choquequirao Trek difficult? Do I need to be in good physical condition?

Indeed, the trek to Choquequirao is not easy due to the challenging geography, but you don’t need to be an athlete or expert trekker to complete it. While being fit is advantageous, allowing you to enjoy the views and appreciate the Incan ruins along the route, regular exercise prior to your journey is recommended. Consider incorporating walks, hikes, or aerobic activities into your routine in the months leading up to your trip. Overall, the hike is categorised as moderate to difficult, so preparation is key.

Are there bathrooms on the Trail to Choquequirao?

Yes, there are ample opportunities to find bathroom facilities along the trail. Initial sanitary facilities are managed by local communities and require a fee to use. Additional toilets are strategically located at lunch spots and designated camping areas. It’s advisable to carry your toilet paper, though it can also be purchased along the way. Don’t hesitate to ask your guide for assistance.

Who will trek with me?

Typically, you will join a group of fellow hikers of diverse nationalities and ages. While it is impossible to confirm the exact composition of your group in advance due to privacy considerations, sharing this experience with others enhances camaraderie and enriches your adventure.

Do I need a trekking guide?

Yes, recent regulations in Peru mandate that trekking guides are nearly compulsory for all trekking activities. Having a guide not only enhances your safety but also makes the trek more informative and enjoyable, as they provide insights about the region’s history and culture. For those with significant trekking experience, it may be possible to go without a guide, but having one can help navigate challenges along the trail.

What if I can’t complete the Choquequirao Trek?

Should you not be able to complete the trek due to health concerns, our guide will assist you in reaching the nearest town for transportation. We carry supplemental oxygen for respiratory issues, and in extreme situations, helicopter pickups can be arranged at your expense, provided you have the necessary travel insurance. Please note that there are no refunds if you are unable to finish the hike.

Will I be dropped off at the hotel at the end of the Trek?

Definitely! After your trek, hotel drop-off is included in the Choquequirao tour package. If your accommodation is in the Sacred Valley, such as Ollantaytambo or Urubamba, we can arrange to drop you off there as well, although this would incur an additional cost of $30.

The weather is notoriously unpredictable. We suggest dressing in layers to readily adjust to varying climate conditions as you ascend and descend along the trek.

Can I suffer from altitude sickness during the Choquequirao Trek?

To effectively manage acclimatization, it’s important to prepare both physically and mentally for the altitude changes you will encounter on the Choquequirao Trek. Engaging in a regimen of regular exercise, such as walking, jogging, or even light aerobics, in the weeks leading up to your journey can significantly ease your body’s adjustment to the high elevation. Spending a few days acclimating in Cusco or the Sacred Valley is also advisable, as these locations are lower in elevation compared to the Choquequirao site itself. This gradual exposure helps your body adapt, typically requiring anywhere from 24 hours to two days for most individuals to begin feeling comfortable with the elevation.

Stay well-hydrated to maintain proper oxygen levels, and consider drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy for altitude sickness. If you experience symptoms like headaches, nausea, or dizziness, supplemental oxygen can help. Our experienced guides can recognize and manage altitude sickness, ensuring your safety and comfort to fully enjoy your trek without discomfort.

How many people are there per group?

Our groups are capped at a maximum of 10 participants, with typical sizes ranging from 2 to 6 individuals. This focus on small, private groups ensures a more personalised trekking experience.

Is it important to order a saddle horse?

The first day’s hike can be quite strenuous, so we recommend budgeting between 70 to 100 soles if you wish to hire a horse to assist with the climb. This option may be beneficial if you anticipate challenges with elevation gain.
