Begin your Adventure Through Stunning Andean Landscapes

2-Day Rainbow Mountain Trek

Our adventure begins with an early 5:00 a.m. pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We’ll drive for two hours to the village of Pitumarca, where we will stop for a delicious breakfast and pick up any last-minute supplies for the trek. From there, we’ll continue another hour and a half to Alqhatarwi, the starting point of our trek. Upon arrival, your guide will provide a detailed briefing on the day’s itinerary and cover essential safety information.

From Alqhatarwi, we’ll set off on an unforgettable scenic hike through the picturesque Pitumarka Valley. The route offers stunning views of the surrounding Andes, with llamas and alpacas grazing along the trail. Don’t forget your camera, as the unique rock formations along the way provide fantastic photo opportunities.

After approximately two hours of hiking, we’ll arrive at the Anantapata zone, situated at 3,700 meters above sea level, where we’ll enjoy a well-earned and hearty lunch. This break is a perfect time to relax, replenish your water supply, and prepare for the next segment of the trek. Take in the breathtaking panoramas surrounding you, as the area offers a serene atmosphere and unparalleled views of the Andes.

Following lunch, the trail steadily ascends for one hour, taking us to the Warmisaya Pass (4,985 m / 16,355 ft). At this lofty vantage point, you’ll be rewarded with mesmerizing views of the vibrant red valley and a distant yet captivating glimpse of the iconic Rainbow Mountain. The natural beauty of this area is truly awe-inspiring, as the contrasting hues of the landscape create a memorable scene. This tranquil corner of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, with its untouched beauty, sits at over 5,200 meters in altitude. Its remote and extraordinary setting provides a unique thrill for those looking to experience the vivid charm of Rainbow Mountain on a once-in-a-lifetime trek.

Discovery

Rainbow Mountain’s captivating history is as vivid as its landscape. Hidden under layers of ice and snow for generations, its colorful ridges emerged following recent climate shifts. Revealed a little over a decade ago, these vibrant, mineral-rich streaks quickly captured global attention. The Quechua named it Vinicunca, or ‘Seven-Color Mountain,’ inspired by its spectacular bands of color. Today, thousands of adventurers flock to marvel at this wonder, drawn by its unique beauty and the challenge of the ascent.

Getting There

Your journey begins in Cusco, the gateway for most travelers. From there, choose a comfortable 3-hour drive to Pitumarca, followed by a scenic 2-hour journey to the trailhead, or opt for an adventurous 3-day trek from the city. For an enriched experience, guided tours and shuttle services are highly recommended, especially for newcomers. The trek itself spans 3 to 4 invigorating hours, so it’s crucial to spend a couple of days acclimatizing in Cusco to gently adapt to the altitude. Remember to pack wisely—bring water, snacks, warm clothing, sunscreen, and gear for unpredictable weather. Though challenging, the striking view awaiting you at Rainbow Mountain makes it a rewarding endeavor.

Weather Conditions

At Rainbow Mountain, expect weather as diverse as its colors! From May to September, the skies are usually clear and the trails are easier to navigate in dry conditions. Nights, however, can be quite chilly. The rainy season, spanning October to April, brings frequent showers and mist, challenging your trekking skills and sometimes obscuring the view. No matter when you visit, dressing in layers and carrying rain gear is essential for a comfortable experience, enhancing the wonder of your adventure.

Temperature

Prepare for a dramatic dance of temperatures at Rainbow Mountain. By day, the dry season can see warmth reaching 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). Yet, as dusk falls, expect the chill to dip below freezing. During the rainy season, the mercury swings between 7 degrees Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit) and -5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit). Packing for both warmth and cold ensures you’re ready for any weather and can fully savor the experience.

Best Time to Visit

For the best trekking conditions and unobstructed views, plan your trip from May to September. This period promises stable weather and easier trails, enhancing your adventure with bright days and starry nights. Yet, if you’re braving the rainy season from October to April, be prepared for a wet and muddy path, and possible reduced visibility due to cloud cover. Whatever your choice, stay equipped for the myriad weather changes to maximize your trek.
