Packing List

Your Packing Essentials

When planning your adventure to Machu Picchu and other breathtaking Peruvian destinations, what you pack depends on your chosen style of travel and timing. We advise you to keep your luggage light to enhance ease of movement, whether you’re navigating through airports or climbing stairs in charming local accommodations. While assistance is often available, self-sufficiency is key, particularly in bustling places like airports and train stations. A wheeled suitcase with a lock is perfect for this journey. Aim for your main suitcase to weigh around 15 kg, but definitely not more than 20 kg. Alternatively, a compact backpack (45-50 liters) offers flexibility. For daily explorations, a smaller backpack (30 liters) is ideal for essentials like water, a camera, and a jacket. Start planning with our ultimate packing guide linked below:

Suggested Packing List

Based on insights from past travelers exploring Cusco and Machu Picchu, we present the definitive list of essentials for a journey through Lima, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, and the famed Machu Picchu.

  • Sturdy Hiking Boots or Walking Shoes – Perfect for cobblestone streets and uneven paths; high heels are a no-go due to slippery surfaces when it rains.
  • Reliable Poncho for Rainy Days – Weather moves quickly here. Always keep a high-quality poncho in your daypack, especially from November to March.
  • Warm and Waterproof Jacket – Essential for chilly mornings and evenings between June and September. Layer with a warm fleece under a waterproof, wind-resistant jacket for added comfort.
  • High-Quality Sunscreen and Sunhat – Protect your skin at high altitudes near the equator with regular sunscreen application.
  • Layerable Clothing – Mornings start cool; by mid-morning, you’ll likely welcome t-shirts and shorts. Opt for layers and convertible trousers.
  • Functional Day-Pack – Ideally with a hip strap for prolonged comfort during hikes and discoveries.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Minimize plastic waste by refilling your bottle from larger containers as you wander the Sacred Valley.
Book Now
  • Compact First Aid Kit – For minor injuries; many small towns in the Sacred Valley have pharmacies, but bring your specific prescription meds.
  • Handy Pocket-Size Torch
  • Comfortable Earplugs – To enhance rest, whether in a lively room or on transit.
  • Protective Cover for Your Pack – A rainproof cover is vital for multi-day hikes, like the legendary Inca Trail.
  • Warm Hat, Scarf, and Gloves – Local markets offer unique Peruvian styles if you need to purchase these.
  • Sealed Bags for Toiletries – Prevent spills at high altitudes by keeping toiletries in zip-lock bags.
  • Insect Repellent – Particularly recommended for trekking and visiting Machu Picchu.
  • Top-notch Camera – Ensure plenty of memory and battery life to capture the awe-inspiring vistas you’ll encounter.
  • Padlocks – Secure all zippers to keep your belongings safe, even in your hotel room.

The 10 Kilogram Suitcase Strategy:

When organizing your journey, your luggage plays a pivotal role in your travel comfort. Whether for a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, selecting the right suitcase makes all the difference. Airlines often impose limits, popularizing the idea of the “10 kilos suitcase” for efficient packing. You might wonder, what fits in a 10-kilogram suitcase? With smart packing techniques and mindful choices, you can actually pack efficiently.

This suitcase can comfortably accommodate a week’s worth of clothing, shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide. Roll your clothes for optimal space, choose travel-sized toiletries, and wear heavier clothing during transit. Embrace the freedom of traveling light, without sacrificing essentials, for an unforgettable Peruvian adventure.

Join us the evening before your trek for a comprehensive briefing, at 6 pm, hosted either in our office or your accommodation. This is a great opportunity to meet your guide, ask questions, and settle the remaining balance for the tour. It’s a perfect start to your exciting adventure!

Storing Your Luggage

We offer secure storage for your luggage at our office, making it convenient for those embarking on the 16-Day Peru Adventure Tour. While on the trail, we advise bringing only necessary items in the duffel bags we provide. Meanwhile, your larger luggage can be stored safely with us or, if more convenient, at your hotel.

Ticket Modifications

Regrettably, once tickets have been purchased, no amendments are possible due to Peruvian governmental regulations. This includes changes to travel dates or transferring tickets to another individual. The tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, so be certain your travel plans are confirmed prior to purchasing. We encourage you to secure your itinerary and payment through thoughtful planning to avoid any future disappointments.

Passport Requirements

Your original passport is a must-have for the 16-Day Peru Adventure Tour, as it is essential for accessing Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. Passport checks are conducted at these sites and when boarding trains. If you plan to renew your passport, please send us a copy of the current one before your new one is issued, and then promptly send a copy of your new passport when available. Ensure you have an extra photocopy on hand to avoid any complications.

Utilizing the Duffel Bag

duffle bagWe will supply you with a duffel bag for the five-day trek, adhering to the Peruvian legal weight limit of up to 7 kg / 15 lbs, which helps safeguard the porters’ well-being. These bags will be weighed, so any excess weight must be carried in your own backpack. Allocate 2 kilos of the duffel bag allowance for your sleeping bag and 1 kilo for a mattress. Plan to leave the rest for your personal items. Remember to pack a day pack with essentials you’ll need during the hike, such as a jacket, rain gear, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and water; a 30 to 40L backpack should be ideal.

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

Embark on this challenging yet rewarding journey, where being physically fit is crucial. The trek spans 45 km (26 miles) through the breathtaking Andes, peaking at an altitude of 13,779 ft (4200 m). We traverse two mountains on the second day. We recommend you prepare by engaging in regular exercise, such as walking 9 miles or 15 km daily, months in advance. Acclimatize by spending 2-3 days in Cusco before the trek starts to mitigate any altitude-related health challenges, ensuring your adventure is both safe and enjoyable.

Unable to Complete the Trek?

While it’s unlikely, if health issues arise that prevent you from concluding the trek, our team is well-prepared with oxygen supplies and can facilitate a helicopter evacuation at an additional cost. Travel insurance is essential due to the non-refundable policy. Depending on recovery, you could still visit Machu Picchu by train from Ollantaytambo. Packing List

Your Packing List

The items you should pack depend on your chosen travel style and the timing of your trip. We advise packing as lightly as possible, ensuring you can carry and lift your luggage while managing short distances or stairs. Assistance may be available in most locations, but there will be instances, such as at airports and train stations, where managing your own luggage is necessary. A lockable rolling suitcase is optimal for this journey. Aim to keep the weight of your main luggage around 15 kg, and certainly no more than 20 kg. A small to medium-sized backpack (45-50 liters) is another excellent option. Additionally, you’ll need a smaller backpack (30 liters) to carry essentials like water, a camera, and a jacket during day excursions. Refer to our ultimate packing list as a guide to get started:

Travel Documents

  • Passport
  • Visa if required
  • Travel insurance policy
  • 24-hour emergency travel insurance contact number
