  • Comfortable Earplugs – To enhance rest, whether in a lively room or on transit.
  • Protective Cover for Your Pack – A rainproof cover is vital for multi-day hikes, like the legendary Inca Trail.
  • Warm Hat, Scarf, and Gloves – Local markets offer unique Peruvian styles if you need to purchase these.
  • Sealed Bags for Toiletries – Prevent spills at high altitudes by keeping toiletries in zip-lock bags.
  • Insect Repellent – Particularly recommended for trekking and visiting Machu Picchu.
  • Top-notch Camera – Ensure plenty of memory and battery life to capture the awe-inspiring vistas you’ll encounter.
  • Padlocks – Secure all zippers to keep your belongings safe, even in your hotel room.

The 10 Kilogram Suitcase Strategy:

When organizing your journey, your luggage plays a pivotal role in your travel comfort. Whether for a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, selecting the right suitcase makes all the difference. Airlines often impose limits, popularizing the idea of the “10 kilos suitcase” for efficient packing. You might wonder, what fits in a 10-kilogram suitcase? With smart packing techniques and mindful choices, you can actually pack efficiently.

This suitcase can comfortably accommodate a week’s worth of clothing, shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide. Roll your clothes for optimal space, choose travel-sized toiletries, and wear heavier clothing during transit. Embrace the freedom of traveling light, without sacrificing essentials, for an unforgettable Peruvian adventure.

Packing List

Your Packing Guide

What to pack can vary with your chosen travel style and the time of year for your adventure. We suggest keeping your luggage as light as possible, ensuring you can easily carry and manage it through short walks, staircases, or bustling stations. While assistance is typically accessible, there might be occasions—such as navigating airports or train stations—where you’ll handle your luggage independently. A sturdy, lockable wheel suitcase is perfect for this journey. Aim to keep your main luggage around 15 kg, certainly not exceeding 20 kg, for ease of travel. Alternatively, a small to medium-sized backpack (45-50 liters) can be a versatile choice. A separate, compact backpack (30 liters) will be handy for daily explorations, carrying essentials like water, a camera, and a jacket. Dive into our ultimate packing list here for a comprehensive guide:

  • Primary luggage
  • Day pack

Personal Necessities

  • Basic first aid kit
  • Necessary medications and prescriptions

Recommended Packing List

  • Robust Hiking Boots or Walking Shoes – This terrain isn’t suitable for formal footwear; opt for comfort and safety on steps and cobblestones, especially in the rain.
  • Durable Poncho – Weather can shift abruptly. Carry a high-quality poncho, especially during the wet season from November to March.
  • Insulating Jacket – Nights and mornings from June to September can be brisk. Choose a waterproof, windproof jacket or layer a warm fleece beneath a light outer jacket.
  • High SPF Sunscreen and Sunhat – The altitude and proximity to the equator make protection crucial to avoid sunburn.
  • Layerable Clothing – Cool starts to the day can require layering; be ready to switch to lighter clothing by midday. Convertible trousers and warm layers are ideal.
  • Practical Day-Pack – Choose one with a hip strap for comfortable extended explorations.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Help address plastic waste in the Sacred Valley by refilling from large bottles.
  • Compact First Aid Kit – While pharmacies abound, bring essential prescriptions as specific medicines might not be readily available.
  • Portable Torch
  • Earplugs – Essential for noisy environments or while traveling by bus or plane.
  • Rain Cover for Packs – Essential for multi-day hikes like the Inca Trail.
  • Warm Accessories – Hats, scarves, and gloves are crucial for colder moments; enjoy shopping for local versions if you don’t pack them.
  • Seal Toiletries in Zip-Lock Bags – To prevent leakage from altitude pressure changes.
  • Insect Repellent – A must when exploring or trekking around Machu Picchu.
  • Camera – Equipped with ample memory and battery for captivating captures.
  • Padlocks – Secure all double zippers to protect your belongings, even in accommodation.

10-Kilogram Suitcases:

When preparing for travel, luggage choice is pivotal. The weight and type of your baggage can significantly influence your travel experience. Many airlines impose strict weight limits, incurring fees for excess baggage.

The “10-kilo suitcase” has grown popular, referring to a suitcase under the 10-kilogram weight limit. What can it hold? With thoughtful packing and selective choices, it can accommodate a week’s outfits, shoes, toiletries, and a travel guide. Roll clothes for space efficiency, opt for travel-sized toiletries, and wear bulkier items during transit. This allows you to pack light without compromising on essentials.

It’s important to be aware of all restrictions enforced by Peruvian authorities regarding the documentation required for accessing these sites, including mandatory passport checks. Therefore, having an extra original copy available is advisable, just in case.

Health Recommendations

Considering your health and how altitude may affect you during the 12-Day Images Peru Tour is essential. Cusco is at a high altitude, and some travelers may experience altitude sickness. We advise acclimatizing for at least two days before starting the trek. Drink plenty of water, and avoid heavy or greasy meals. It’s also recommended to avoid alcohol and smoking during the acclimatization period. If you have a medical condition or are on prescription medication, consult your doctor before departure and carry any necessary medication in your carry-on luggage. Remember, your health is paramount to enjoying the wonders of this journey.

The Duffel Bag

duffle bagAs you prepare for your thrilling journey along the Inca Trail, we will equip you with a duffel bag for your five-day adventure. This bag can hold up to 7 kg (15 lbs) by Peruvian regulations, to ensure the well-being of our amazing porters. Each bag will be weighed, so if yours is over the limit, you’ll have to carry the extra load in your backpack, adding a dash of personal challenge to your trek. Allocate about 2 kilos for your sleeping bag and 1 kilo for your mattress, leaving you with a cozy 4 kilos for your essentials.

Our reliable porters will handle your duffel, along with food and camping gear, but remember, you’ll only see it at the end of each exhilarating day. For the hike, pack your day bag with essentials like a snug jacket, raincoat, camera for those breathtaking views, sunscreen, snacks, and water. A 30 to 40-liter backpack is perfect for keeping you prepared and comfortable throughout this awe-inspiring adventure.

Is the Trek Difficult? Do I Need to Be in Good Shape?

The Inca Trail trek is undeniably challenging, and maintaining good physical condition is crucial. Spanning 45 kilometers (26 miles) through the majestic Andes, this adventure ascends to a peak altitude of 13,779 feet (4,200 meters). On the second day, you will undertake the exhilarating task of climbing two mountains. Preparing with a moderate fitness level is essential, involving regular exercise for several months beforehand. Incorporating walks of around 9 miles or 15 kilometers daily into your routine can be especially beneficial.

Additionally, acclimatizing to high altitude is vital; spend 2-3 days in Cusco (3,350 meters / 11,047 feet) before starting the trek. This acclimatization period helps minimize the risk of altitude sickness, ensuring a more enjoyable experience. Ultimately, thorough preparation and a solid fitness foundation are key elements for a successful and unforgettable journey!

What if I can’t complete the trek?

Completing the 12-Day Images Peru Tour package is highly likely, but it’s smart to be prepared. If health issues arise, our team is equipped with oxygen kits and can arrange a helicopter evacuation at your expense. Travel insurance is necessary, as refunds aren’t available. You’ll be transported to the nearest city and assisted with travel to Cusco or “Aguas Calientes” as needed. If you recover quickly, you may still visit Machu Picchu by train from Ollantaytambo (additional cost).

If the trek can’t continue, enjoy other cultural sites in Peru! Your safety is our priority, so feel free to contact our team with any concerns during the trek. Remember, we’re here to support you. Don’t let this possibility deter you—proper preparation ensures a rewarding trek. Happy exploring!
