Packing List

Your Travel Essentials

Preparing for a memorable journey to Machu Picchu and other captivating destinations in Peru? Your packing list will depend on your chosen travel style and the season. Strive to pack light so your luggage is manageable. It’s essential to be able to carry and transport your own bags over short distances and navigate stairs independently, especially at busy spots like airports and train stations. While assistance is often available, self-sufficiency is key. A lockable, wheeled suitcase is perfect for this adventure. Aim for your main luggage to weigh around 15 kg, and certainly no more than 20 kg. A versatile backpack, between 45-50 liters, is an excellent alternative. Include a smaller daypack (30 liters) to tote essentials like water, a camera, and a jacket during your daily explorations. Find inspiration from our ultimate packing guide linked below and start planning your trip today.

The Ultimate Travel Checklist

We have curated a definitive packing list for your incredible journey through Lima, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, and the majestic Machu Picchu, based on the experiences of our seasoned travelers.

  • High-Quality Hiking Boots or Walking Shoes – Forget high heels! With uneven cobblestones and slippery stones when wet, sturdy footwear is indispensable.
  • Reliable Poncho for Rain Showers – In Peru, weather can change rapidly. Keep a good-quality poncho in your daypack, especially from November to March during the rainy season.
  • Warm, Waterproof Jacket – Expect chilly evenings and mornings from June to September. A durable, windproof jacket or a warm fleece layered under a lightweight shell is essential.
  • Effective Sunscreen and a Sunhat – Due to the altitude and proximity to the equator, frequent sunscreen application is crucial to avoid sunburn.
  • Layered Clothing – Mornings start cool, requiring layers you can peel off by midday. Convertible trousers are a smart choice.
Book Now
  • Functional Day-Pack – Look for one with a hip strap to ensure comfort on long hiking or exploring days.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Help combat plastic waste in the Sacred Valley by using large bottles to refill a personal reusable bottle.
  • First Aid Kit for Minor Injuries – While pharmacies are readily available, bringing essential medications, especially prescriptions, is advisable.
  • Compact Torch – A handy pocket torch is a great addition for your adventures.
  • Earplugs – Essential for peace when encountering noisy accommodations or traveling.
  • Waterproof Cover for Backpack – Crucial if you’re embarking on multi-day hikes like the Inca Trail.
  • Warm Accessories – Cold mornings and evenings call for a hat, scarf, and gloves, which are available in local Peruvian markets.
  • Secure Toiletries in Zip-Lock Bags – Altitude can cause bottles to burst, so safeguard against spills.
  • Insect Repellent – Absolutely necessary for treks and visits to Machu Picchu.
  • Camera with Ample Memory and Batteries – Capture those breathtaking moments.
  • Padlocks – Secure all zippers and important items in your luggage and hotel room.

10-Kilo Suitcase Wisdom:

Traveling light is crucial, with many airlines imposing strict baggage limits. The “10-kilo suitcase” has emerged as a popular choice, and you’d be surprised how much you can fit within this weight if you pack strategically. Essentials for a week, including clothes, a pair of shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide, can all fit. Maximize your space by rolling clothes, using travel-size toiletries, and wearing bulkier items during travel. Embrace packing efficiently without sacrificing the essentials on your unforgettable Peruvian adventure.

Essential Info.

Key Tour Information for the 10-Day South of Peru Adventure

We encourage you to thoroughly review the following details about this extraordinary journey, as it will answer many of your questions about our offerings and the 10-Day South of Peru Tour Package.

Arrival in Cusco

Upon your arrival at the Cusco airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative who will guide you to your accommodation. To ensure a seamless experience, please provide us with your flight information no later than 14 days before your arrival. Look out for our representative holding a “SUNRISE PERU TREK” sign outside the terminal, as they are not allowed to enter inside.

Pre-Trek Briefing

An informative briefing for our 10-Day South of Peru package is scheduled for the evening before the trek at 6 pm. You can choose to meet either at our office or conveniently at your hotel. This session is an excellent opportunity to meet your trekking guide and gain clarity on any questions or concerns, as well as finalize the remaining balance of the tour.

Luggage Storage Options

You are welcome to store your luggage at our office during your adventure. We understand that travelers on the 10-Day South of Peru package may have multiple bags. To enhance your convenience along the trail, we recommend packing only essential items in the small duffel bags we provide. Your main luggage will be safely stored until you return from this remarkable journey. Alternatively, your hotel can also accommodate your luggage storage needs.

Can I Change the Ticket Date After Purchase?

Unfortunately, changes to ticket dates or ownership are not permitted. The Peruvian government enforces strict regulations that prevent any modifications once tickets are purchased. Permits are neither transferable nor refundable. Therefore, it’s crucial to confirm your travel plans prior to purchasing, as changes cannot be accommodated afterwards according to Peru’s regulations. To avoid disappointment, please ensure your itinerary is finalized before making payment and obtaining your permit.

Is My Original Passport Required?

Yes, your original passport is vital for the 10-Day South of Peru package. It must match the one used during the booking process for entry into Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. Your passport will be verified at several points, including Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail start, and train boarding. If renewing your passport, send us a copy of the old one for your permit and update us with the new one as soon as possible. We emphasize strict adherence to Peru’s documentation requirements, including passport checks at key archaeological sites. Having two original copies handy is a worthwhile precaution.

Health Recommendations

Prioritizing your health is essential to truly savor the 10-Day South of Peru package. Since Cusco is situated at high altitude, some may experience altitude sickness. We advise spending at least two days acclimatizing before the trek begins. Stay hydrated and avoid heavy, greasy meals and alcohol during this period. If you have health concerns or are on medication, consult your doctor before traveling and ensure you have all necessary medications in your carry-on. Your well-being is crucial for a memorable adventure.

About the Duffel Bag

duffle bagWe’ll provide you with a duffel bag for your five-day trek packing, adhering to a weight limit of 7 kg / 15 lbs as required by Peruvian law to protect the health of Inca Trail porters. Bags will be weighed before acceptance, and surplus weight must be carried in your backpack. Within the 7 kilos, allocate space for a 2-kilo sleeping bag and a 1-kilo mattress, leaving about 4 kilos for personal items.

Your duffel will be transported by porters alongside food and camping gear, but won’t be accessible until day’s end. Carry essentials like a warm jacket, raincoat, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and water in a day pack. A backpack between 30 to 40L is recommended.

Is the Trek Challenging? Do I Need to Be Fit?

The trek is indeed challenging and requires adequate physical preparation. Spanning 45 km (26 miles) through the Andes, it reaches an altitude of 13,779 ft (4200 m) with two mountain climbs on the second day. Regular exercise leading up to the trek, such as daily walks of 9 miles or 15 km, is highly recommended. Acclimatization is just as important; plan 2–3 days in Cusco (3350m / 11,047ft) to adjust and minimize altitude-related issues like acute mountain sickness. Proper preparation and fitness training are crucial to fully enjoy this adventure—your efforts will be greatly rewarded!

What If I Can’t Complete the Trek?

While it’s rare not to complete the 10-Day South of Peru package, it’s wise to be prepared for health-related contingencies. Our team is equipped with oxygen kits, and we can arrange helicopter evacuation if needed, though costs apply. Travel insurance is mandatory since refunds are not available. If necessary, we will arrange transportation to the nearest city and assist with travel back to Cusco or “Aguas Calientes,” contingent on circumstances. A quick recovery might allow you to continue your adventure and reach Machu Picchu by train from Ollantaytambo (at an extra cost).

If you’re unable to finish the trek, there are still many cultural sites in Peru to explore. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, so communicate any issues during your trek with our team. Rest assured, alternative options are always available, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Don’t let potential hurdles deter you from this exceptional journey. With proper preparation and precaution, completing the trek will be a rewarding experience cherished for a lifetime. Best wishes, and happy exploring!

The 10 Kilogram Suitcase Strategy:

When organizing your journey, your luggage plays a pivotal role in your travel comfort. Whether for a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, selecting the right suitcase makes all the difference. Airlines often impose limits, popularizing the idea of the “10 kilos suitcase” for efficient packing. You might wonder, what fits in a 10-kilogram suitcase? With smart packing techniques and mindful choices, you can actually pack efficiently.

This suitcase can comfortably accommodate a week’s worth of clothing, shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide. Roll your clothes for optimal space, choose travel-sized toiletries, and wear heavier clothing during transit. Embrace the freedom of traveling light, without sacrificing essentials, for an unforgettable Peruvian adventure.
