About the Duffel Bag

We’ll provide you with a duffel bag for your five-day trek packing, adhering to a weight limit of 7 kg / 15 lbs as required by Peruvian law to protect the health of Inca Trail porters. Bags will be weighed before acceptance, and surplus weight must be carried in your backpack. Within the 7 kilos, allocate space for a 2-kilo sleeping bag and a 1-kilo mattress, leaving about 4 kilos for personal items.

Your duffel will be transported by porters alongside food and camping gear, but won’t be accessible until day’s end. Carry essentials like a warm jacket, raincoat, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and water in a day pack. A backpack between 30 to 40L is recommended.

Is the Trek Challenging? Do I Need to Be Fit?

The trek is indeed challenging and requires adequate physical preparation. Spanning 45 km (26 miles) through the Andes, it reaches an altitude of 13,779 ft (4200 m) with two mountain climbs on the second day. Regular exercise leading up to the trek, such as daily walks of 9 miles or 15 km, is highly recommended. As we journey onward, we’ll marvel at the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, home to wildlife like vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas, and various bird species, including flamingos and Andean eagles. At the Patapampa viewpoint, positioned 4,800 meters above sea level, enjoy views of soaring volcanoes and snow-capped peaks. The Inca Trail spans 45 kilometers, allowing everyone to hike at their own pace. The second day’s challenge is ascending to Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,200 meters. The third day captivates with varied landscapes and numerous ruins. On the final day, we’ll rise early to catch the Machu Picchu sunrise before the crowds.

Along the route, we’ll explore various small ruins. First is Llactapata, known for its terraces and irrigation systems. On the second day, we ascend the steep path to Dead Woman’s Pass, with breathtaking views of the Vilcabamba mountain range. After the second pass, the trail flows through a cloud forest towards the third pass at 3,600 meters, featuring an original Inca tunnel.
